I was looking for a 27" TV for my kids playroom this weekend. I looked at the Sylvania at Sears and was not impressed with the picture quality. I also missed out on the Sharp 27" 27N-S100 at Fred Meyers 5 hour sale and the Philips/Magnavox 27" at Good Guys for $199 (both got decent reviews at epinions and amazon).

What I ended up with was the undadvertised Sharp 27" 27N-S50 at The Good Guys for $195 (sale price of $219 -$25 instant rebate). The 27N-S50 is the same as the 27N-S100 except has no S-Video in and has a cheaper (non-universal) remote. I set the TV up already and am very happy with the picture quality. Happy shopping!!

I know price was your main consideration, but I think that the S-Video in is a critical feature to miss. You will notice quite a dramatically better picture with S-video, especially with DVD source. If this is just a second or third TV, then it's probably not as big a loss, but if you are forking the dough over, might as well get something that will last a while, eh?

S-Video really is not that important from what I've found. It all depends on the tv, really. I've got a good monster cable RCA video cable that I ran from my dvd player to my TV, and I hooked the DVD player up with that at first..and it looked really nice. Now, I had a friend come over and say 'buy the s-video cable, it makes it look so much better' well, I did that. Now, to tell you the truth..there was hardly any difference if any. I examined many dvds and in different conditions (lots of color on screen, dark scenes, etc.) and between the s-video cable and normal RCA, the only difference I could find is that the black was just a little bit darker with the s-video. Something that could easily be adjusted in the tv options anyway. I'm sure different TVs take S-Video input differently, and in varying degrees of quality, but that's just what I've noticed on my father's big screen. (40" Mitsubishi Tube - Rarer than rare, and was a $3000 tv 5+ years ago - excellent TV)

Perhaps the S-Video input is important on Flat screens, where they can display much more picture information in a given area, but just your standard Tube TVs..In my opinion, you really aren't going to notice much. Besides, if you're that obsessed over picture quality..you should be spending $600+ on a good TV. ;)
