These are decent, I have a few. My favorite by far is still the Philips yellow-top "warm white" LED's (also sold at Home Depot), but they usually only get as low as $15 each.

I think I put these into my bathroom in the Hollywood-style fixtures (4 rows of open bulbs above the mirror) and they were too bright directly, so I moved them to the reading lamps.

For those of you in SoCal, Daiso still has that OptoLight LED bulb for $3. It's a dimmable A19 bulb (like the Cree above), that's 10w (60w incandescent equivalent, 800 lumen), 3000k warm white, 25,000 hour lifespan.

We picked up a dozen and we've been pretty happy with them. Excellent for the price, though we only have a few different LED bulbs here at home, so I only have limited comparisons.

Weird, I have not been to a Daiso and must correct this as two are not far from me.

$3 is an amazing price. i would replace every one of my incandescent bulbs at that price. too bad there's no daiso anywhere near me.

$12.97 for the 60W in TN, KY, and NC area. Not even a warm deal if it's only on sale at some HDs.

I picked up some Utilitech Pro 9.8-Watt (60 W) A19 Medium Base Warm White (3000K) LED dimmable Bulbs from Lowes on sale for $9.98/ea. With a 10% off coupon and 5% off through ShopDiscover came to $8.48 + tax each.
They got a Best Buy rating from CR.

Can anyone recommend some good lighting options for a living room in a 1 bedroom NYC appt? It is NOT a large appt.

I bought a floor standing halogen lamp 150W and it is just way, way too weak. Overhead fixtures are not an option. This is a co-op building and they have strict rules against that.

300W halogen torchiere?
Get a torchiere that can take a 150W incandescent and put in a 65W CFL? (300W equivalent)
Plug-in sconces?
Candlelit pentagrams?
Plug-in track lighting?

Pretty impressive that Daiso deal. Have to visit the local one next time and see if I can get those for $3. I have four lights in my bathroom and CFL last only a year or so. I hear that turning CFLs on and off a lot really kills their life expectancy.

I have a couple cheap wal-mart 3-way floor lamps. However, regular bulbs work, but only at 1 setting. The way the bulbs are made, the center and outer conductor only touch the appropriate contacts. I've used Incandescent, CFL, and LED in these lamps without issue. YMMV.

I tried the 60W Cree LED's, but I screwed up and got soft white, which seem really dim and unappealing compared to the 60W daylight CFL's I've been using. I'll give the Cree Daylight bulbs a chance if I see them on sale. (not on sale in CO)

edit to add: My CFL's are using 15W, the Crees 9-10W

It does. We've killed a bunch of CFLs already. :(

I'm just waiting for a good deal on bright dimmable R40 recessed LED bulbs, then I'm getting rid of all of our CFLs.

I think its more that many of the CFL are a POS in the electronics, but Home Depot is pretty good about exchanging bad ones if you keep receipts.

Last batch of "daylight" which actually seem more blue than yellow to me, are very bright for 60w. Oddly wife prefers them and had me swapping the others out.
