As far as I can tell, this is the best solution for playinig MP3's via your home stereo without burning them to disk.

Last month the lowest I could find this for was $290.

is this product obsolete now with the home media option addon to TIVO ? I have an audiotron but am considering the home media option and can find the reasoning why i shouldnt sell my audiotron if I do, except the spdif output i guess.

So, you're going to spend $268 to save the time of burning songs to disc?

This plays streaming internet radio too. I had one, sadly it broke, but I'm considering purchasing another one. It worked REALLY well. The interface is simple, but works well. You can also control it from a webpage. Overall, a VERY good product!

Ummm...... Yep. With over 7GB of MP3's its alot easier to manage my music inventory and playlists through a file system than it is paging through a CD binder. I have way to much music for my 25 Disk changer. I was thinking of getting a SONY 300 or 400 CD changer, but then that would cost me a couple bones also.

Frankly playing MP3's over my LAN is a much better solution.

BTW, gr8snakee, that xbmp looks pretty cool, I've never heard of that before.

I have one of these and still use it today. Works great, probably should upgrade to the latest firmware. Not even sure what the latest firmware is right now. I paid $189.00 for my at a local BB about a 1.5 years ago, they were on clearence. Even on ebay today the Audiotrons are selling for more than $189! Great MP3 player. I like the fact that it actually looks like real home audio equip, rather than a PC.

Wow, I bought mine nearly 2-years ago for $150 from Best Buy!
I thought electronics usually depreciates!
Or is this a different Audiotron?
Looks the same.

Maybe he can afford to do so. Time is money. There's more to life than driving 30 miles to pull off a price match to save $.50 off a movie.

What about the new SonicBlue solution? Networked DVD due to ship in May for $249 or $299.

Can't you convert your audio outputs to RCA and spend $10 to listen to your mp3z on your stereo?

Yes, if you want a loud, often unsightly computer as part of your entertainment setup, not to mention the need for a monitor. If it isn't loud or unsigltly, I would suspect that it would cost more than the Audiotron. People want to take advantage of their home network and large servers with mp3s and stream them to other points of the house. Your idea is acceptable, but some people consider it too low rent.

The Audiotron is $255 at TheNerds.net

I'm surprised no one has brought up the SliMP3. Seems to me like it's got everything that the Audiotron does, plus it's cheaper, runs on open source software, and has lots more features. Really the only downside I see is that you have to run server software, rather than just opening shares on the network, but having web-based control over the server makes it worth it to me. I've seen only good reviews on it and I'm thinking of picking one up myself. They're going for $229 right now and are constantly getting updated firmware and new features.

Fixed SliMP3

I still think that the SonicBlue option is best, if and when it ships. This thing has the video option. Stream video as well as audio and be able to manage playlists on the tv screen, rather than on a small screen or browser window.

My PC is connected to my A\V reciever through a RCA cable. Costs including the RCA to Headphone jack adapter less then $10

For 2 years I have used the Coax digital out and ran a 50ft high quality (cable cost was $30) RCA type cable from PC in offfice to home audio video receiver. My sound card was a Santa Cruz, now I am using the on board sound on Nforce2 motherboard; both have SPDIF outputs. My receiver, a Kenwood, has digital inputs. So they signal is digital between the units and sounds great. I also have 4 sets of speakers throughout house (and outside house) on speaker selector switch. I have around 8,000 MP3 files. Fire up media player, select tracks or open playlist is super easy.

Of course, this is dependent on being able to physically run cables. I know some want a wireless solution. I do have my housed also wired with a Cat5e network and have jack by stereo if I ever want to use that option.

I definately do not want to go with running off my computer's sound card. I need a solution where I can sit on my butt in the living room and fire up a playlist via a remote control. I know I could still do it with a computer, but again I won't have a computer in the living room (wife says no).

So far from the responses SLIMP3 and Audiotron are the two that fit the bill. I'm not sure about the SonicBlue solution, I thought they were going out of business.

If any of you that got the Best Buy clearance a while back wish to sell, I'd buy your used Auditron for $150.

The XBox's sound quality isn't superb. It's good, yeah, but on decent equipment you can tell the differences. Not only that, the XBox can get pretty loud (with a CD inside, if you take it out no sound, but that can get annoying) and also the lack of a remote and the need to have your TV on tossed this idea out of the window for me.

I hook up the digital coax out of my computer to the receiver to play this, but the Audiotron will hook up to the network, which would be helpful.

This would go nicely with my Toshiba Magnia SG20 appliance. Supports file sharing for the Audiotron out of the box, no need to leave extra computers on.
