I've heard that the Apex quality isn't the greatest, but their stuff is cheap. Amazon.com has this Apex DVD player with a 40 GB hard drive for recording shows. You may preorder it here.
I will wait for reviews of this product, but $190 doesn't seem all that bad. No monthly fees. Doesn't appear to have an ethernet port to transfer shows to PC
