I have a Apex 5131. It plays VCD and SVCD easily. It also will play photos in .jpg format. At this time I don't think there is a Macro or Region hack, but I'll bet someone is working on it since according to Apex link, the 5131 is firmware upgradeable.
I just bought for a test run from circuit city and tried my svcd's on it. In my opinion, it is not worth it at all. My svcd's are jumpy and the picture quality is poor compared to my Pioneer dv-434. I returned it the next day, and bought a pioneer dv-503 with a 5-disc changer at my local Costco for 199.99 -30MMIR = 169.99 + tax. Tried it out and it was just like my other pioneer but with 5 discs. Much better than the apex, and well worth the price.
