Warm - 50 PK HP TY CD-R's for $10 @ Sears - No Rebate

Hello Everyone-

I know some of us got in on that deal for 50PK of HP CDR's @ Sears for $4.97 a couple months ago. Well... my Sears here in Houston, TX (Willowbrook Mall) has more in and they are on Sale from $29.99 -> $9.97. There is nothing to indicate a sale, it says 29.99 on the sticker and on the CDRs themselves. However, I like a good anandtecher remembered these were once on sale w/o notice so I took them up to the check out counter, asked for a price check and they rang up as $9.97. Not sure if all Sears got these back in stock but I know mine was sold out two months ago after I bought them all 🙂 I bought 4 more spindles and left like 8 more so go buy them if you want them. They are made in japan 16x TY's. Most people have been able to burn them at 32x+. Great CDRs for a cheap price w/o rebate IMO. Happy Hunting folks!

PM HERE I COME!!! 😀

Who are you going to pricematch to? I surprised HP still manufactures CD-R media... but it's Taiyo Yuden CDRs so I can't complain! Where else do they sell HP CDRs? I remember my local OfficeMax did... they don't anymore...

I remember that original thread referenced in this post. Back then I bought 150 HP CD-Rs. They were labeled as 16x but actually burn up to at least 40x. Guess it pays to buy quality CDs.
Anyway, back in that original post it was mentioned that HP quit the CD-R business and that was the reason why the CDs were so cheap. Clearance item.

Considering that, good luck pricematching this. If you can find some clueless CSR, you might get away with it, but I doubt they will pm a clearance item, epsecially one that has been out of production for at least 6 months.

I bought 600 HP CDRs(12 spindles) last time when it was $4.97 for a 50PK. Great quality. $9.97 is still good price.

I agree, I think I will stop by at my local Sears and see if they have any, was gonna go to the mall anyway for the after Xmas sales, hehehe.
The part I like about this deal is that I will not have to wait for rebates to come in. Always a good thing.

10$ for 50CDR's and no MIR. That is better then just warm. I got some for 5$ too, but I probably restock for that price. They are great quality and I have not have one fail on me yet.

My last pack of TYs only burned at 40x....anyway to force the buner to burn them at a higher speed?
So how much faster is it a say 48 or 50?
Edit, just noticed the username. Ha ha. Guess you dont have time2kill.

nice price! anyone else can confirm that any other sears has this promotion? $10 out the door is pretty decent. i just got the Fuji 100pk from BestBuy for $25.99 - $18MIR = $7.99. says 48X on the side. ^_^x

Just checked online, can not find any on the website. Might be a B&M only, or a local only.

I will stop by my local store tomorrow and see what I can find. Maybe they have some hidden on some shelf, can always hope. 😀

Turn off SMART-Burn to burn at any speed. (Not Recommended. May result in unreadable disc, bad sectors, etc...)

If I get any more CDRs, I'll die in the avalanche.... Most have been free after rebates, so I think the warm rating on this is accurate.

hope someone else is getting in on this great deal. Might be kinda YMMV if HP no longer produces them and it is for sure B&M only. Happy Hunting folks 🙂

EDIT: Midlander - The key to this post is no rebates and TY CDR's. What brand are you getting for free? That is the reason 😛 Granted there isn't a lot of difference between CDR's, IMHO, however, I do trust TY's more than Memorex :/

Great deal....

I just picked up a pack at my local B&M (Tupelo, MS). There was no price listed, but a quick price scan revealed the price of $10.

I never seen Taiyo Yuden manufactured CDRs to be Free After Rebate... they're usually, at most, like $1.99 After Rebate... Then again, I don't deal with rebates... 😉

The best things in life are free... expect TY CDRs:Q

So far, these CDRs seems to burn just fine at speeds of 40+. Now I understand why the Fuji's are such good CDR media....

There was still one pack left at my local Sears...I may go back and pick it up 🙂

Yeah, all of my local Sears stores in MA still have piles of these things. Shelf is marked at $29.99, so no wonder they haven't moved. Been visiting every few weeks, asking a different person for a price check, still $9.97 here too. I didn't post this, cause I didn't think it was such a hot deal, with Fuji T-Ys going onsale with rebate, for like $5 and under a spindle. However, if you are desperately in need of T-Y discs, $10 out-the-door isn't bad. I've never tried the HP T-Y discs, some people claim the topcoat is more durable than the Fuji ones. All I know is that the 16X T-Y discs won't burn faster than 16x in my OCed Lite-On 52x, while the AT&T-branded 40/48x-rated Ritek discs will burn at 32x reliably, and are cheaper after rebate. Sorry, don't really mean this to be a thread-crap, more like my personal observations, and a confirmation that lots of these spindles are still out there at $10 each.

Fuuny you should mention that.. I leave Smart-Burn on, and I've still burned three absolutely unreadable discs in my Lite-On, when burning at the max recommended speed. I suggest actually burning discs at what they are rated at, not what Smart-Burn tells you it thinks they are capable of, because it is more-often-than-not, wrong.

It still applies, by your logic even more than before, if you are going above what smart burn says.

It could probably be said that I'm a worry wort... I always burn everything @ around 12 or 16x because I want the highest fidelity and I'm never really in that big of a hurry 😛 Altho, I'm always tempted to really burn at the 48x my burner can do 😛

I have had the same problems...
From my experience, 32x is the point of best possible quality burn / fastest time performance ratio for general burning.

... And 12x is also my safe speed for old CDRs I had from early 2001 ("so that's where those CDRs have been hiding at!"😉)

I think you're agreeing with me.. but I'm not sure. The point is, that "Smart-Burn" is supposed to prevent you from burning an unreadable disc, if you leave it enabled, but it in fact doesn't work. All it does is have a recommended max speed based on media-id tables that are tuned for more modern media. trying to burn older media (8x), that uses the same mfg ATIP code as newer media, will cause it to recommend the faster max speeds for newer media produced by that mfg, and that will of course cause burns to older lower-rated media to fail. I was under the impression that "Smart-Burn" also included some sort of "running OPC" check (what Teac calls it, not sure what Lite-On calls theirs), that can determine burning effiacy by the amount of reflected laser light during the burning process, and if the laser is running at too much or too little power, it will correct it. Plextor, Teac, Sanyo, and I think now Yamaha advertise this feature, and I was pretty sure Lite-On had something like this as well, but it just doesn't work right. I suppose this is more of a rant that my new Lite-On 52x can't burn as well as my old Yamaha 6416S, even with all of it's supposedly highly-rated improvements. I don't think that the Yamaha used firmware media tables, it just plain worked. It can still burn the new 40x-rated discs too, as well as older media.

So in a manner of speaking, leaving Smart-Burn on or off is really irrelevant, since it doesn't work. What is more important is setting the burn speed at what is recommended by the disc mfg, not what you think you can get away with with a faster CDRW drive.
