Dunno if this is a great deal or not, but it's in today's Fry's ad (here in the Sacramento, CA area). Based on SKU number shown in the ad (cross-referenced it at Outpost.com--#3575084), it is the Maxtor 160GB UDMA/133 8MB drive (L01P160) retail kit...no rebate required. For those of you--like myself--who missed out on the Staples deal from earlier this week and don't really care for the SATA card that was bundled with the Staples deal, this might be a pretty decent deal...considering that both Newegg and ZipZoomFly currently sell just the bare drive itself for around $95.

Sure it doesn't beat the just-dead Seagate deal but at least it doesn't require a rebate...

FYI--Outpost currently doesn't reflect the sale price for this drive (listed at $120); maybe they haven't updated the site yet.

you can PM to this at office depot and add a whole bunch of other crap to use the 20 off 100 coupon thats floating around on the FW forums to sweeten the deal.

Probably old news, but worth mentioning...them sneaky Fry's bastids smartly left out everything in their ad that would explicitly identify as to what make and model the drive is--in all likelyhood done so as to make it more difficult to pricematch at another competitor.

Are Maxtor's reliable compared to Seagates? Noise level, speed, etc?

They've been so cheap lately.

Avail today for $59.99 at Fry's Atlanta. Ad doesn't say brand but does say it's an ATA133 retail boxed, so...

The new maxtors you can not even hear. I used a couple in Raid last week and they were not even audible.

I stopped by the Sunnyvale Fry's yesterday, and there was a large stack of these drives. I passed on it due to the 1 year warranty.

Yeah, it's a decent deal...but I couldn't wait, as I had just recently received my copy of HDLoader and wanted to put it to immediate use...;)
