I was in the market for a DVD-ROM

Staples sells this for $79 staples

CompUSA for $49 compusa (print this)

Price match, and use $10 off $40 coupon. link deleted

$40, easy.

Yes I am aware Compusa will have this for $69 with $30 MIR this weekend, but this deal avoids the rebate.

PS i tried to get them to price match with some of the shady dealers on pricewatch, but no dice, after shipping it was much the same anyway.

Do you need a DVD controller card for this? How much video ram do you need? I'm thinking about throwing one of these in my new Emachines.. ;)

well i use an ATI card, that has DVD hardware support in/on it. ATi DVD software SUCKS! The WinDVD 2000 that came with the drive is great. You should goto windvd homepage to see if your vid card has hardware support. If not just means your computer will have to work hard to run a DVD.

Roomate has: 400 AMD, 192MB, TNT M64 32MB, and the video is jumpy.

Me: 900 AMD, 512MB, Radeon VE 32MB, smooth as silk.

Me 2: 950 AMD, 256MB, Radeon VE 32MB, sooth as silk.

unclebud: i have never done a PM in a store before, it was very easy, just print out the compusa page, and you're all set.

Is the jumpiness caused strictly by his video card or does it have to do with the fact that he only has as 400 Mhz (whereas you have twice as much)? In other words, if he replaces his M64 with a Radeon V32, would he then get smooth playback as well?

well the min req. for WinDVD in full software mode is 400MHz. and because his M64 doesnt have any DVD hardware support the CPU is doing alot of work.

yes I think if he put a video card with DVD harware on it, ATI, Savage chipset, or something like that it would be smooth.

even if i leave my celey 300a at 300, with 128mb of ram, with an ATI Rage Fury 32mb I get non-skip playback

Gotta love hardware DVD decoding (especially ATI's ;o)

playing DVDs no sound (cause it's only running DVD x 1), when using as a CD-ROM small aircraft are taking off from my computer.

Louder ---> quiter on my system

Delta DVD ---> Delta CD-Rom ---> Teac CDRW

thanks for pointing that out, now i notice it ;)

Thanks for posting this deal. I just did it today at the Staples in Los Angeles at Bundy and Olympic.

At first they didn't want to do the price match, but I kept asking them why they couldn't do it. They didn't have a good reason and finally gave in. They also didn't want to take the coupon at first, but they gave in because it was only $10.

no reason for them to give you a hard time at all?! they must think it's their money. I hate it when they make you feel bad for buying stuff from their store. my local staples is cool.

Blah. I have a Delta DVD-ROM. At the time I bought it, Staples had a $40 rebate going. After using some other coupons and discounts I had, I got the DVD-ROM for free... and I overpaid. If someone gave me this clunker as a gift, I'd never speak to him again. It's much slower than advertised (can't even keep up with my 16x burner), and it sounds like a freakin' jet engine.

Go here

This thread links to the firmware upgrade that will make this DVD quieter and improve overall performance to a level that is acceptable

It's true, I got this drive for a friend months ago. With this firmware update, the drive runs much better. A definite improvement.

BEWARE!!!...Delta drives are not very good. Lots of folks in the forums here have had problems with them.

Danger, the firmware upgraded it to something that barely works, instead of something that doesn't work @ all, still very noisy, freezed during most movie playback, and doesn't read many disks.

I also have this drive from Newegg For $55.00 + shipping, it's been great

Can't use the firmware upgrade... the flash utility doesn't seem to run under Windows, and I can't boot to DOS 'cause I don't have a floppy drive. Yeah, I know, I know.
