Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

It's not an RPG, it's an RTS (real time strategy) game. It'll play a whole lot different than Oblivion. Think more along the lines of Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations, etc.

Does not require the original Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War to play.

the ONLY rts i EVER played was B&W2 and i loved it.

down to micromanaging the minutest detail and i LOVED the war element but wished i had "more" control over my armies and creature . . .

knowing this and that i know NOTHING about Warhammer 40K . . . might i like it?
:Q

😀

tough question, i know

Holy crap... this has Necrons in it. I want.

Well, Warhammer 40k is a lot different from an RTS... it's turned based and a whole lot of dice rolling... if you've ever played D&D or something like that, think of it on a much larger and observable scale (no pen and paper).

A single game takes forever, even if it consists of 5 or 6 cycles (which can take hours if someone moves each part slowly).

RTS huh? Gee...not sure I like this game anymore. 🙁 I stink at planning stuff. I like "observable games." Like Diablo; you get 5 points, you distribute them amongst your skills and you can see the characters' attributes/skills improve.

I like Oblivion a lot...I thought this was the same.

OK...I give up my thread to you guys. 😀 Discuss.

DOW doesn't focus as much on micromanaging. also, your units are (for the most part) organized into squads as opposed to individually control. so when you have marines, you build them as a squad and move them as a squad.

download all the dawn of war demos - the original + winter assault demos will give you the best idea of the gameplay (skirmish mode available at least in the original, i know)

IMO, Dawn of War is the best RTS since starcraft, though i haven't played Company Of Heroes, which is also made by relic (same basic gameplay as DOW, AFAIK)

The original tabletop game on which this game is based is like that, yes, but the computer version is absolutely an RTS.

Basically the gameplay is identical to Company of Heroes (big surprise), except there are Necros/Imperials/Orks/etc. The strategy map is the same format as the War of the Ring mode in BfME 2.

You might want to check out Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

Picked it up the day it came out. Loved the first two, this one is an awesome addition. One of the best expansion packs ever to be released. Plus it's stand alone w/ 7 playable races for 30 bucks. It's a freaking steal!

dawn of war was released well before COH was. they took the DOW resource model and tweaked it for COH, not vice versa 🙂

I know. I was just trying to give people any idea of what it was like, those people who have played CoH recently, but not the original DoW.
