Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr - Anyone playing it?

Is it really as good as it looks? It appears to be the game that "has it all" from the trailers but I've been fooled before. Recent reviews are "Mixed" while all reviews are sitting at "Mostly Positive".

Just wondering about this since I have a few games I just grabbed and I'd like to hold out if it needs some polishing, but I've been going back and replaying (and reading) through the older Warhammer games in my library.

MEE!!!!

And its pretty damn good. Like a slower paced, tactical Diablo.
You arent mashing buttons like crazy, you're deciding which attack is the best to use in a given situation. Imagine a real time X-com, with only one soldier.
You can have two sets of equipment and it makes sense to keep them distinctive. The type of item you equip determines your attacks and skills when you go into a combat mission. A chainsword and shield gives you very different options from a greatsword.
Plasma weapons have different abilities from lasers. Shotguns are much different from automatic guns.

If you actually check those reviews, most people are complaining that the game is always online but seems to have horrible matchmaking right now. I suspect that issue will be resolved. In the meantime I'm enjoying the campaign. Many sectors, each with multiple star systems, each with multiple planets, each with several missions. And each mission has multiple difficulties so you can acquire more and better loot (similar to Vermintide). Apparently you can also craft but I havent gotten that far yet.

Good story. Decent acting. Fun graphics, murdering Chaos has never been so lovely.

I recommend it.

Good. I never got around to playing Deathwing or Vermintide due to financial reasons but I recently got hired onto a similar company where I'll be making close to what I was before, so I'll be able to grab all these games I've been missing out on.

I'm not really interested in the multiplayer portion of these games, but I've heard that Vermintide and sometimes Deathwing need other players to have fun with the game. I'm fine with games specifically tailored for online play, but with Inquisitor, I'm planning on playing this solo.

OK so I've found out the campaign missions cannot be repeated for more loot. Also the specialty missions that pop up occasionally are very lucrative but difficult. You definitely need friends to complete them. And if you fail them it actually costs you.

I'll need to join a Cabal and get some help.

Hmm, that was what I was afraid of.

I'm not a big fan of how stretched out the Warhammer universe has become since Relic was shut down.

The game is not that bad any RTS player can opt for this game, as far as game mechanics are concerned some people find it bit slower and consider it as a slower version of Diablo/Path of exile anyways you must give it a try game worth playing.

The impression I have gotten from Games Workshop's licensing practices over the last several years does not give me much faith in any Warhammer IP outside of those developed by Relic or the Total War guys, and even those appear to be declining in quality.

I didn't follow the development of this particular game all that closely, but I was hoping for more of a TB-RPG than the ARPG it seems to be (Inquisitors lend themselves to a story rich RPG game, especially after reading Abnett's Ravenor and Eisenhorn books).

Gameplay is solid. I’m playing on extreme difficulty right now. I die a few times, but otherwise I’m doing very well. Crafting is a little confusing at first. With time it will get easier. Very fun game.

bumping this because Inquisitor: Martyr is on super sale on steam for $24 (base, xpac + all DLC).

the initial reviews of the game were mixed, but I just completed the first few missions (essentially the tutorial for the game), and I'm actually quite impressed. Not as fast-paced as Diablo, PoE, or Grim Dawn.
I'm playing as a psyker. Killing monsters is enjoyable, decent skill system, and I like the different weapon combinations. Sounds effects are pretty damn good, and visually the game is quite gorgeous.

So far the levels are fairly small with limited objectives. I see this as both positive and negative - sometimes it's nice to have continuous gameplay without interruptions. On the other hand, I wouldn't enjoy a constantl Diablo 2 Act 3. Damn that sprawling jungle. With my more limited ability to sit down for hours on end, knocking out a mission or two at a time is a welcome change.

Looking forward to purging the heretics in the name of the god-emperor (although I play space elves in tabletop. Wraith units ftw!)

I've been really curious about this game as I love all things WH40K but given the horrible reviews when the game first launched, I didn't want to touch it since it sounded like another mediocre dungeon crawler with the 40K banner slapped on for fandom reasons. But if it's actually a solid game, I might grab it while it's still on sale.

You could always check out the first few hours and refund on steam if you don't like it. I can't remember what the time limit is (2hrs? 5hrs?)

I like the idea of an ARPG with a mission or level format rather than the Diablo-esq continuous world thing. Having gameplay broken up into discreet chunks definitely fits my busy life much better than the alternative.

Nevertheless, I'll keep sitting here waiting for a full blown 40K CRPG experience. Something epic like the Eisenhorn or Ravenor stories rather than the mountain of low-effort trash GW seems happy to pump out.

I love the Dawn of War games but they have yet to capture the insanity and scale of the 40k universe. I want a Total War style Horus Heresy game, or a squad turn based Necromunda game.

Uh, there's two Warhammer 40H Total War games out...

- Looks like those are Warhammer Fantasy though, not 40K.

Fantasy based Warhammer is frustratingly just called Warhammer with no modifier to signify its the fantasy-verse.

Those are the high fantasy warhammer universe, 40k is grimdark science fiction

Both good points. I bought them ages ago but never played them. Now that you both mention it, I really want a TW game set in the 40K universe with Necrons.

beat martyr and the expansion, prophecy. overall, a really enjoyable experience and worth the money (i think i got it for $25 on sale?). story-wise, it was actually pretty interesting, even if you're not a super WH40k lore nerd. but it does take a bit to get going.

things i liked:
the mission structure breaks the game up into approachable chunks
nailed the grimdark feel, and the enemies are faithfully recreated from the tabletop
sense of scale - things that are big and scary on the tabletop are correspondingly big and scary in the game
some really fun missions where you get to take control of big mech things
leveling occurs pretty quickly, and spells/passive buffs are unlocked at a nice pace.
graphically beautiful
items granting skill slots or certain abilities i thought was a pretty interest change to the normal "gearing" of an ARPG game
"supression" buff/debuff system is an interesting take on when/how your character gets CC'd
"intel" missions, found in game, are extra challenging and extra-rewarding

things i didn't like:

limited items - items are class-specific, which i felt really limited potential opportunities
most enemies just run at you - so limited combat mechanics, at least for my psyker.
big mech things make the big mech missions too easy (despite being fun to blow stuff up). also missed opportunities for kaiju fights
i think the difficulty curve fell off a bit at the end except for boss fights, which were still quite deadly/punishing.

i didn't delve into the endgame content, which people who like D3 Grifts and things will probably appreciate more than me. i felt that Martyr was best when it threw lots of enemies types at you from different directions, with a boss/champion in the mix to really make you choose who to attack. if you're an ARPG fan, this might be a nice change of pace from the hyper-fast action of PoE or Diablo3

It's on sale right now, but I see they spared no expense in rolling out the 10+ mission DLCs. Are they worth it or would it be better to just grab the base game and expansion? It's all 70% off right now.

i'd buy the complete pack, since the base game and expansion separately are only a couple of dollars less.
