Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War

I was quite ... shocked, to say the least, when I saw that.

Three days ago I bought the original (the store still did not received the new expansion). And I also patched it up to the latest version, 1.40.

I considered my system to be better than "average" ... but man ... that game eats up so much CPU it's actually ridiculous. It varies between 70% and usually goes up to 95%. Constantly stays within that range of CPU usage.

Thanks to God I'm not even On-Line when playing it. All un-necessary programs and background tasks are closed. I even cleaned and "repaired" my Windows Registry (using Windows XP with Service Pack 1). Although yes I know the Registry doesn't affect gaming performance, but I told to myself that I had to try at least a few things to see if it would make a difference in terms of CPU usage.

But no.

The game itself performs ... alright ... I guess. In terms of frames-per-seconds it's ok, but nothing mind-blowing. It does lag at times, especially with "Persistant Bodies" at a "Low" setting (But I play with that option Off).

Any of you here go the game, with perhaps a similar system + Operating System combination, and also experience the same CPU issues ?

Or even with a completely different computer (In terms of components) ?

Because I really, really like the game, I'm still playing the Campaign right now, and I'd like to know if it's mainly the cause of "bad coding / optimization" or simply that my CPU is too ... old ... to sustain a game that was released since a good time already.

Thanks for your time, and help.

Games are meant to run your CPU at 100% or near to it. If they didnt, there'd be something wrong.

Dawn of War is an excellent game and the expansion pack is definately worth getting when you can.

Well ... perhaps you're right.

But why does my Half-Life 2, my Doom 3 and my Rome: Total War do not even use 50% of it ?

Dawn Of War is the only one of my 30'ish PC games using so much CPU.

If only Dual-Cores could be more supported by the already available games ... I would go with an X2 today just for it. I can't believe I missed that game since its release ... but man does it make my CPU cry.

Ive ran Dawn of War on my Athlon XP rig from 1ghz to 2.1ghz and every time, every game ive played has used 100% of my CPU.

Dow, Quake 1 (yes 1) and Dungeon Siege 2 used 100%.

I haven't checked CPU usage on mine... but it runs fine with no lag (1280x960, max detail on everything).
