Ward Weaver trial will stay in Clackamas Co.
09-16-04
OREGON CITY -- A Clackamas County Circuit Court judge has turned down a request by lawyers for accused killer Ward Weaver to move his trial to a different venue.
Weaver, 41, is accused of murdering two Oregon City girls -- Ashley Pond, 12, and Miranda Gaddis, 13 --in 2002.
Weaver's attorneys had argued that intense media coverage would prevent their client from receiving an impartial jury and a fair trial.
But prosecutors countered that Weaver himself was partially responsible for the media coverage that has surrounded the case, after he solicited interviews with local reporters.
Jury selection is expected to begin early next year. If convicted, Weaver could face the death penalty.
Weaver's next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 5.
