Warcraft 3 Recoverable Freeze and sound loss

Almost every time that I play Warcraft online, the game will freeze, the music will play, and then sputter and stop. At first I can't even toggle num-lock, but if I hit ctrl-alt-delete, I'll be brought to the task manager, after about 5 to 7 seconds. Then I can go back into the game, where it says 'Disconnect', and wait another few seconds, and everything is fine, except that the sound is gone. About 10 minutes later, the sound will miraculously just start back up again. This happens with each sound provider (EAX2, Miles, Dolby)

System: P4 1.7, ABit TH7-II RAID. (Problem occurs with and without RAID controller active)
GF3 Ti 200, 29.42
Audigy (not latest drivers, because I don't feel like downloading 30 megs on a 28.8)
2 3Com 3C905B-TX NICs, both disabled
PCtel HSP56 MicroModem, possible cause of

Resident things: Powerstrip 3 (Can't live without it 🙂)

I have a strong suspicion that it's the modem, because during a recent thunderstrom, my SupraMax was fried. This new one I scrounged from an old 95 box. Other contender is the Audigy, just because I fault Creative for everything under the sun.

Side question, the SupraMax doesn't dial in anymore, but I can query it with ATI commands, and it responds fine. Anyone ever had this happen?

I'd say DEFINITELY get a new 56k modem or get a friend w/ high-speed to burn you the Audigy drivers. Though there's no guarantee that new CL drivers will help anything 😛
I think you actually have 2 problems. #1. the dropping sound (Audigy) & #2. the freezing (modem)
d00d, trying to get onto Bnet w/ a 28.8 is just ASKING for trouble. I'd suggest get a new modem ASAP & then see if the freezing continues. If it does, the Audigy is causing more than just dropping sound. So then I'd ditch the Audigy & get a Phillips card (Seismic or Acoustic Edge)

Well, I can't connect over 29.2 on this modem, simply because of the phone lines in the house or neighborhood. I can't get DSL because I'm too far away, although I'll probably get cable in a few weeks. 28.8 on b.net is manageable, just hard to micro your hero, or react to lusted orcs (Can't dispel quickly enough.)

I'll try to get the CL drivers in the near future, hopefully it'll help. Picked up a Windows Update driver for my modem, so we'll see if that helps too.
