Warcraft2 is a DOS game (Tho they did port it for windows it still ran in DOS) and Win2K does not really support DOS games, sorry your basically out of luck.

I don't think you'll have much luck.
Even if you get the graphics running, DOS sound doesn't work in Win2k, so you'll have to run w/o sound :(
I have the War2BNE which is DirectX so I can play that, but I've tried Duek3D and the Original Warcraft, and neither work in Win2000 :(

Warcraft 2 was one example of a fantastic game turned casualty of the NT kernel. God I love the music of that game!

Hmmm...thats odd...have you downloaded the Microsoft Compatibility Updates...

I dont have Warcraft but I do have starcraft running perfect on win2k and it is the same engine.

According to NT Compatible the Bnet version works fine. I don't remember there being any adjustments in this Bnet version for Win2k compatibility.

However i remember on the older version of War2 there used to be a manual configuration option for selecting video videocards and if you selected the wrong one you had the Vesa problems you mention.
Go into the game folder and see if you can run the video config (forget what it's called)- i'm pretty sure it is DOS though :(

On a side note, i havent played War2 in about a year. If anyone wants a game in the weekend PM me :)

No...no it's not. Warcraft 2 Battle.net Edition and Starcraft are the same engine. But he clearly said he's not using the BNE, and the original warcraft2 was a DOS 6.22 game. You can run it under Win95/98/ME just fine, but it is natively a DOS game.

sound does work in dos windows in Win2k if you use these drivers called VDMS. do a search on ntcompatible for them. it works pretty well, i played day of the tentacle with sound recently and it sounded just like i remember from the first time i played it forever ago

I say if you really want to play it pick up the BNE. I bought it to replace my old DOS copy (BNE only costs like $10 at best buy). It works flawlessly in Win2k and you get Battle.NET capabilites (plus some other minor stuff) to boot.

You're outta luck with that version. Same thing happened to me when I tried firing up the huge system killer otherwise known as Doom 2... Man I miss that game...

Syborg: doesn't GLDoom work w/ Doom2? (it's a windows opengl version. smooths out the textures and stuff. I really liked it when I tried it a year or two ago).

Yes, Sound can indeed work in DOS under NT/2K, you need a program called VDMSound, you can find it here VDMSound`

Like the others have said Win2K and DOS don't get along . . . if you are into that game a lot and/or other DOS games, I would suggest a multiple boot setup. You can even throw Win98 on their along with DOS and at boot you'll have the choice to boot as either Win2K/Win98/DOS. But I caution, setting up a multiple boot system is tricky and hard to get running completely smoothly. My 2 cents.

BNE is a Win32 app so it should run just fine under Windows 2000.

No...no it's not. Warcraft 2 Battle.net Edition and Starcraft are the same engine.

I doubt that very much. Do you have a link to verify this?
Starcraft supports a lot of advanced features that Warcraft2 doesn't.
