Also, when the beams incinerate those people, notice the clothes stay intact, floating blissfully in the air. Wouldn't their clothes get destroyed as well?

the book is by h.g. wells, the radio broadcast that caused hysteria was by orson welles =)
 
what caused mass hysteria? What's in the book needed to understand the movie? I understood it, it was stupid. Aliens can't power mechs, and walk around without a space suit thinking 'yea it's all good.'

They played advertisements over the radio. And back in the 1930s, people didn't have brains so they thought it was an actual attack and mass hysteria ensued. A few people were smart and offed themselves.

I believe that some people committed suicide. I remember my mommy telling me that, but she could have just been saying that to give me nightmares (it was just lastweek).

the ACTUAL story of the hysteria goes like this:

there were two competeing radio dramas of the week, both of them were going to be big. i forget the first one's name but the second was "war od the worlds." the first one started at (i forget the actual times so I'm using 8pm as my interpretation) 8pm and WOW started at 8:05. everyone naturally tuned in at 8pm to the first one and got caught up in its drama. at 8:05 WOW started off with a detailed description how it was just a story and not real in anyway but people hadn't heard this since they were listeing to the first one. 8:10 roles around and the first one is in commercials and WOW starts with "ALIENS ARE LANDING!" people, not hearing the disclaimer, go nuts and the rest is history.
