I was sort of excited until I saw it has Tom Cruise in it. I don't dislike Cruise but casting him tells me it's either not going to take place in England as it does in the book or he is going to adopt an English accent which I doubt. Therefore we are probably looking at another massacre of a classic like was done to Around the World in 80 Days earlier this summer.

I see that they are spreading the risk out with Paramount as a partner.

There is not enough info to know if it will be any good yet.

What does War of the Worlds have that requires highest budget ever? It's not like titanic where they had to build the actual ship!

It will probably be a massacre just because they always eff this stuff up, but I don't see why you think it would be hard from him to use an English accent. Any competent actor can speak convincingly in multiple dialects.

But they will probably "Americanize" it because that's just the way it's done, it seems. I don't really see why the locale is so significant, though.

With Cruise cast in the lead, I fear for this movie. Based on what he did with Last Samurai, I have to say that he sucks doing period pieces. Spielberg will likely do a good job directing it, but somehow I think they'll butcher the story as well. It has great potential, but I'm no longer expecting much.

Well since the movie industry f'ed up AVP, The Hulk, Catwoman, and other potential great movies. Who knows how many different ways they will drive this movie into the ground.

Hey, are any of you familiar with the Jeff Wayne musical version of War of the Worlds? It was produced in the 70's as a rock opera type album. It had Richard Burton doing the narration and guys from the Moody Blues doing the vocals. I hope they capture some of the elements of that version, especially the look of the huge tripods and the alien's terrifying howl.

But with Tom Cruise..........

At least I can dream, can't I?

That Jeff Wayne version was great. My son, when he was very young had a love/hate relationship with it. He would beg me to put it on but after a few howls and monster noises he would run off. He'd then have nightmares all night and my wife would be PO'd at me. It was an excellent version of War of the Worlds.

I guess I was alluding to that very "Americanizing" you mentioned as well. With Cruise, as opposed to some British actor, well known or otherwise, I have a feeling War of the Worlds will be a bastardized iteration of the orginal. Very rarely it seems to me does Hollycrap pull these remakes off.

I will be disappointed if it doesn't take place in England which is in keeping with the book. That is why I suspect it will NOT take place there and probably in the States.

That would be awesome. I'm still waiting for a B'way producer stupid enough to try to stage it....:(

Don't forget the Time Machine or the Island of Dr. Moreau. HG Wells is rolling over in his grave like a hotdog on a stick.
