War is not a good thing

Now, my point here is not even saying "we shouldn't go to Iraq." I'm sort of undecided on the issue to be honest-I kind of see it both ways.

What is my point? It's that some people who are in support of the war with Iraq seem to be almost excited and thrilled about it. "Yeah, kick their asses!" "Anyone who doesn't like this is just a pansy-ass wuss!" etc. May I remind you that war is horrible? Even if it needs to happen, and in same cases (possibly this one) it does, it is not something to be all happy about.

Maybe part of my frustration from these comments comes from the fact that I'm 17. People in my age group are somewhat nervous right now-the debate of whether to go to war is in a way deciding the fates of our lives. I have friends who are joining the military now, and even though that is their choice it's scary to see them go off to fight (and they will be fighting soon, I think we've all figured that out by now). If things get ugly, my friends and myself will probably be called up to go off to war.

This is not a plea for sympathy, because my friends and I don't deserve any for any reason just yet. All I'm saying is I wish people wouldn't seem so enthusastic about sending my friends off to die for your freedom. If you believe war is the answer, then I can understand. If you think this is a good thing, then that I cannot understand.

I quite agree. As I constantly remind my friends, I am not "pro-war", anyone who is must either be insane or a fool. Yet I recognise the need for this war and I see that other "solutions" have failed. There are no other options that I can see, and so what must be done, must be done.

DUDE LETS KICK THOSE IRAQI BUTTS

Just kidding....honestly I'm also undecided about whether or not we should go to Iraq and fight a war. Personally I hope that a war doesn't happen, but if it does I want to see it justified beyond a reasonable doubt. One of my buddies is in the reserves, and I don't want him going off to kill people when theres a chance that what he's doing is not justified.

I would definitely prefer that Saddam grow a brain and realize that he is a fvcking ego-maniacal idiot and invite George himself over to destroy every last bit of VX and Anthrax and who-knows-what-else.

But, then reality strikes. And that is soon to be followed by cruise missile and smart bomb strikes. Yeah, war is hell. But Saddam has left us with no alternative.

Well, its because people are willing to put their lives on the line for your's and mine freedom that I will ALWAYS support whoever volunteers to go into the armed services. That said, the action of war is always terrible...deaths are inevitable as well as destruction. But the outcome of war can be a good thing if fought for a just and righteous cause and fought justly and righteously. It is NEVER the intention of the United States military to target innocents. They spend billions of dollars on weapons systems so they don't have to...very few other militaries do this.

Now, the likely war with Iraq is not like any war we've fought before. It is a completely different situation from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War. Why? Because we are encountering a situation where a dictator invaded a country over a decade ago and we pushed him out and could have/should have removed him from power. But, we abided by the wishes of others and did not. The result is that the PERCEIVED power/strength/righteousness of the USA has gone down in the region. Now, the dictator that we repelled from Kuwait has NOT lived up to his promises resulting from his defeat. In fact, he has blatantly ignored his agreements and said, "So what? What are you going to do about it? I will continue to do as I please."

My question is, do we let him continue his blatant disregard of his responsibilities and just walk away and increase the perception of US weakness in the region (making things worse) or do we remove this cyst on the face of the Middle East and help the people he has subjugated learn about freedom and opportunity (which will also cut down on terrorist activities)?
