So I'm looking to take advantage of the beautiful cyber Monday deals...

I haven't bought a good shooter in awhile and haven't played a war game in 5-6 years. So I'm looking to grab a Battlefield 3...new Modern Warfare...etc. but unsure which one.

Any thoughts on which is the best one for my needs? I'm looking for a game that is mostly shooter friendly with some tactical aspects involved. I like the solo aspect of the game and some squad work...but I'm focusing on single player and not multi-player as my main reason for buying the game. So if the single player campaign is like 5 hours and no replay value then its probably not for me.

I don't know if anyone has played it but I'm looking for something with similar style to C&C Renegade. It got mixed reviews overall but I love the game. You were the singular solider but you had units to command in some missions and had primary/secondary goals to achieve, etc. I think it had a nice blend and a decent story as well.

So overall I dont know too much about CoD, Battlefield, Rainbow 6 franchises so I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on the matter. I am looking for a newer game out in the last year or so.

Thanks!

It depends. Would you prefer EA's generic military shooter? Or Activision's generic military shooter?

If you want teamwork and strategy, then Battlefield 3 would be the correct choice. Call of Duty doesn't involve much thinking.

Oh... well, if I understand correctly, the singleplayer campaigns in BF3 and MW3 are both pretty terrible.

If singleplayer is your thing, then Rainbow 6 might be a good choice for you. Rainbow 6: Vegas (the first one) is actually pretty great, and the second one is alright too. Some really cool strategy and squadwork involved in those. It's been a couple of years since the last Rainbow 6 game though, so you won't find one that's been made "in the past year".

Too bad the Steam sale just ended this morning. If you asked this on Saturday, I could've pointed you to Steam where you could buy all of the Tom Clancy games for 75% off.

Hope that helps.

I very much enjoyed the single player campaign in Battlefield Bad Company 2. I bought it for $7 during last year's Steam Holiday sale. So if you can wait a month, I'm betting it goes on sale this year for even less.

BF3's solo campaign is EXTREMELY rigid and shallow. You simply follow instructions to move to a specific area and shoot/repeat.

Even when you have the opportunity to flank enemies, the computer teammates tell you where and how to do it. No thinking is required on your part at all. They threw in some silly QTE commands to make it more cinematic, but it means even less interaction and feels weird for a keyboard FPS.

Stay far, far, far away from it if you are fond of coming up with tactics in a game. The graphics are awesome though.

Yeah this is what I figured...I guess I'll stick to FEAR, Crysis, Borderlands and Half-Lifes of the world...

Pretty much.

The first time I shot a sniper out of a window in BF3, only to watch him respawn immediately....again and again...., I knew I was pretty much over the pathetic, mindless campaign.
