The place I'm working at now won't let me play with any bigger or cooler toys than I'm used to on the network so until I can find a new job I need to find something to keep my interest. I've been reading a whole lot about wiresless and have even briefly tossed the idea of a wireless isp around in my head (not even so much as starting one myself, but just is it a good idea.)

Anyway I did something I really shouldn't have done and spent $60 to order a lucent silver card. Now I'm in the corn fields of southern illinois and I'm a tad afraid that cows might just block my signal, but I just wanna play around with it, see how many other networks are in the area. I am around a university so I'm hoping there will be a few. Mind you nothing malicious or even illegal is planned, more of a ping sweep than a port scan if you will even ;)

So do any of the rest of you partake in this hobby? Tips? Cool things to go? I'm a ham radio guy so I'll be building a couple antennas to try out. I'm also interested (although also not really looking forward to) seeing how the local police will react to a car with tinted windows, the license plate of unix, and a big 20 year old white guy and a smaller 20 year old filipino guy sitting in the front seat, faces illuminated by a laptop at night :) Better stay away from the local fbi offce ;) Anyway share your network stumbling stories

I havent personally done it but it seems to be pretty easy. Ive been thinking of getting an x86 laptop and a certain pcmcia card (chipset is important from what I hear) to sit around cracking WEP ;)

I should get a wireless card for my ibook and see whats around the neighborhood though... :p

DISCLAIMER: Do not do anything illegal beyond using someone else's pr0n passwords ;)

From what I understand the lucent card (orinoco) is usually a pretty good one to use. Netstumbler.com lists all the cards that are compatible with their program. As much as I like linux (wave lan tools here) I think I'd use win2k for stumbling too just so I could easily hook it up to gps to map out the networks.

Be well behaved, remember cracking wep would be illegal I believe. From what I understand though alot of people don't even enable wep :)

For x86 Id have to use OpenBSD. Its just easier. And I Think its the prismII chipset that cracks wep, but I cant remember right off, I had my eye on an smc card. :)

Yeah Im sure it is illegal, but it would still be fun just to try. I definitely wouldnt be using hte knowledge for anything. Heh, yeah, I know no one uses wep basically because it kills the speed...

Yeah airsnort used to be just prism2, but now also has a patch for orinoco :) I just really wanna try and see how many networks are down here. And I figure a couple geeks driving around with computers and antennas should freak out any paranoid neighbors :D
