I was at HomeDepot last week checking out their axes, and saw this...

Not sure what it's good for besides splitting skulls, but I kind of want one :^D

Curious thing to find at HomeDepot.

I've thought about getting a tomahawk or fish billy club for home protection. Then all I have to do is work on my war face.

If you're willing to get physical, this would be an ideal weapon for close combat, that doesn't require gunpowder. It feels great in-hand, and swings like an extension of your arm.

That said, combat is about the only use I see for it. For camping, a hammer back is much more useful. For brush clearing, a longer blade is better. Even for breaching, it doesn't really have enough ass to get through something as quickly as a heavy axe. It would be good for a soldier as lightweight auxillary/backup piece, when anything is better than nothing.

I saw a show about the military using tomahawks on one of the science channels. I keep looking at them every now and again. It would even be useful in a hallway or bathroom.

I have to admit I would shit my pants if someone was coming at me with a tomahawk. It certainly has a high intimidation factor.

I saw an entire company of Soldiers issued these SPAX tools. I was jelly.

I'd like to see that in person. It looks like it could be a useful addition to my belt. Judging from the picture, I'd have to extend the sharpened portion to the hilt. This is what I currently have as my short blade...

It's a nice tool, but their qc could be better. I like the idea of having a pick from your link.

LMAO! Only at Home Depot. I bought a throwing axe on ebay but it does not look anything like that.

Remember watching a program on medieval warfare and part was on I belive the Franks who used Axe throwers as their "ranged" troops. The axes desgined with a handled that if it didn't hit someone before hitting the ground to bounce back up for second chance injuries. Standing in front of an incoming wave of those must have been pleasant.

Bought one. Went to the store for some led "Edison bulbs", and picked it up. Probably won't do anything but fantasize about beating someone who needs it, but whatever. It's a nice tool. I sometimes have to work in sketchy areas. The axe would be quicker to deploy than my main blade. I can wear it when I do that stuff.

Seems like getting chopped to death would be way more unpleasant than getting shot.

This is not a proper weapon for in-home defense. It requires wide swings or overhead swings to use and you simply won't have room in many locations indoors.

A real indoor weapon would be short sword, or any other short stabbing weapon. It allows you to keep your opponent at arms reach and work in narrow hallways etc.

Or.... you could just carry a gun.

You don't need anything greater than head height, and shallow side swings. A short sword would have most of the same constraints aside from the straight jab. I also wouldn't want my opponent at arms reach. Up close and personal, controlling their weapon hand is the way to go.

I'd prefer a shotgun though.

That actually does look like a pretty nice light axe to me.

I have one I inherited from my grandfather that is a bit old school, but you can about shave with the thing. It holds an edge well, after a lot of use over the years.
