Rig in sig is current. Been thinking about CPU, RAM, Video card. Wondering what people think the current bottleneck is in my system.

Planning a full computer upgrade at the end of this year, so not looking to go new motherboard, etc. just yet.

Thanks!

Your computer should run Excel and PowerPoint just fine.

Could use more RAM though.

Of course it runs Excel and Powerpoint.

I am a gamer, heavy multitasker, photoshop, nuendo (audio mixing).

Thanks for the added info.

S939 is a dead socket. Both Intel and AMD do not have DDR1 on their future roadmaps.

If you must upgrade, do the memory first and CPU second. Look for deals on used parts, on FS/FT or on eBay.

Definitely tossing in 2 more sticks of 512 is going to boost things. Aside from that your processor is the only other thing that will be noticeable.

As far as gaming goes, the 7800 isnt to shabby. Ram is more of a concern and for 300 bucks you wont improve to much over a 7800. Wait for the directX 10 cards to drop in price before you upgrade.

So basically:

1. Ram First, 2GB total for XP should more than suffice, and reduce page file usage, which is death when multi-tasking.
2. Processor: 4200+ isnt exactly a slacker and you arent going to get a whole lot of benefit/dollar going to a 4800+ or FX-60, probably wouldn't bother here unless you find a killer deal.
3. Video Card: Wait for a DirectX10 card that fits your budget.

Pretty much my recommendation for 300 bucks is just upgrade your RAM, or wait for a DX10 card in your budget

Thank you.

Hmm... maybe I should not upgrade now? Maybe a new PSU and do some OC?

2GB of RAM would be nice. Thinking of getting Intel w/ 4GB w/ new mobo and 8900 (or whatever comes out next) at the end of the year (move to Vista etc.)

Thanks Krotchy, your reply came in while I was typing my last one.

Adding another 2x512mb VS buying 2x1GB and selling current 2x512mb?

Better to get 2x1GB DDR500 so I can OC?

I like your previous idea better. Buy a better psu that you can use in your next system, then overclock what you already have. I think you'd be throwing money away putting it into that machine, then trashing it after a year.

Thanks all.

Think I link that idea the best.

Going with a Corsair HX620W or HX520W (should keep me set for a long time!).

I'm living OK w/ the 7800GT. I bought that thing 1 month before the 7900GT came out. That sucked! Waiting for the 8900 series this time (or whatever they do next). Something that will be current with the rig I build next!

Thanks all!

Running on the Corsair 620w now. Loving it! OC CPU to 2,585Mhz right now. Cool and quiet keeps it at 1,175Mhz when idle. Q-fan lets the fans slow down so system is quiet. Living the dream! (Except my mem fried after changing the timings in the BIOS at stock speed. Go figure?!?! RMA issued...)
