Wanting to buy a good digital camera. Recommendations anyone?

Hi all,

I'm currently using a 2mb Sony camera and if you go in doors and take
pictures in low light situations the people look white as a sheet even with
the flash set low.

Also when you use the zoom the pictures are grainy and not sharp at all.

My camera is a Sony DSC-P51.

I like using the memory stick and the usb upload interface.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice not super expensive
digital camera that does good low light shots and also zoomed shots?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

after much research I got the fuji s5100. Also got 1 for mom and I am glad I went with this camera. Great clarity, 10X zoom! Fantastic ergonomics, great battery life, great price for all the features of this camera. Been taking a lot of bird pics with 10x zoom and it is very nice. Indoors with zoom was exceptional.

Most any Canon or Minolta that fits your budget should make you very happy - their lenses are usually top notch. But I also like Panasonic, Fuji, some Olympus, some HPs (largely designed and built for them by Pentax) and even some of the "D" series Kodaks with the Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lenses. Kodak is the top seller in the states and is something like second world-wide in unit sales, so they must be doing something right.
. I tend to prefer digicams that use the SD (Secure Digital) flash card as they are cheap, ubiquitous and reasonably fast (but very small and easy to "misplace" - mine get painted with "International Orange Neon" or fluor. yellow Testor's model paint almost immediately). I tend not to approve of digicams that use proprietary cards like Sony's Memory Stick and Fuji's XD (but at least Olympus is also using the XD) - now who else uses the Memory Stick??? Hmmm...

. If I had the money right now, I would be all over the Minolta Z20 like stink on shiznits! As it is, I'm using an HP 735 refurb that I got for way under $100. and it puts out some decent pix.

Tip: Anyone would be wise to get a camera that can use AA batteries (rechargeables or even Alkalines in a pinch). Proprietary Li batteries w/o the AA option is a no-no in my book. Holding 4 AAs instead of two is also a good thing in my book.

. One site for reviews for digicams and everything to go with them is: http://www.steves-digicams.com .

Cost is relative - but the best overall value now is a Canon Digital Rebel - here's one complete with a decent lens for $700. That gives you 8 megapixels, terrific battery life, and opens the door to all Canon EF lenses.
