Off the suggestions of a guy at Home Depot, I put some wood glue on the ends of the boards before puttin them in, which I was told would seal up and tighten around the screws. I didn't think it would strong enough considering the length of the shelves, but then I realized that I wouldn't have anything on it heavy enough to cause any stress or sagging.
The wood is pine. I'm not sure of the grade, but it's an inch and a half thick, 8 inches deep. Again, suggested by someone at Home Depot.
i used MDF to build my printer stand becuz it looks nice and was cheap. when i built my tv stand, i used some pine and some particle board. pine is pretty strong... strong enough to hold my 80lbs tv, so should be ok for your dvd's.
before i started with my tv stand, i consulted with my cousin and he suggested that for shelves, i should have "wood rails" for the shelves to sit on to help support the weight. he told me that two screws on each side might be a little too much to ask for the screws. lemme grab a digicam and get a screenie of what i mean.

P.S. - in the pic, u can see the difference between particle board with a urethane finish (the side piece) and one that is just sanded (shelf where the vcr sits). i got lazy.
