With the exception of Jack Russells (who are big dogs in a small body) any dog less than 20 lbs is a cat.
you don't know what you are talking about :p
As Excelsior points out. Little dogs don't play well with small children - just like cats.

As a rule, the bigger the dog, the more he will let the little ones tool on him without even blinking.
yeh, right... pitbulls, dobeys, and rotties are great with kids

Hell..it even translates over to big dogs often ignoring small dogs when they bark at them. However...I do think that some small dogs are ok with children..as long as the puppy grows up with the children..so he/she knows them well.

Yes, they can be. Unless some idiot trains the dogs otherwise, but that can happen regardless of the dog.

Again my suggestion would either a Sheltie or a Pug. I have a two year old niece, the same age as the OP child, and she gets along real well with our Sheltie. In my experience Pugs are probably the only smaller dog that seems to work well with kids.

Many of the breeds that people mentioned here are not very suitable for kids. There are exceptions, of course.

Pomeranians own.

I wouldnt let a kid play with a little dog though, as they WILL fvck it up sooner or later. unless your kids aren't idiots.

My parents have a black Pomeranian and she's a blast. She's a lap dog but loves to play and ride in the car. She does bark a lot and her bark is extremely high pitched.

I have 2 pomeranian's. They are both awesome. But they do like to bark a lot when strangers are over. However besides then, they just bark when they want to go to outside to go pee. One of them is very playful and fun, and the other is very protective and very alert. I love them both.
