wanting more out of my 9400

wanting to get more out of my 9400. it's at 3.4ghz right now using 1.3 vcore, the ram is at 1.9v

Abit IP35e
4gb ddr800 corsair xms
2gb ddr800 kingston n5

i've been using the kingston for a long time. it's good ram. i stuck the xms in there just to see if it could keep it. all 6gb is running at 425 with a multi of 8.

it seems when i bump the fsb anymore windows gives me problems loading. it does post however. what do you guys suggest i do to get the most out of this chip? i'd like to try to use the ram i have for now.

There is a limit for each CPU, and perhaphs you need to boost up your northbridge voltage, What is the max on that on your board ? You might need to take it there to achieve what you want.

Also PLL needs to be tweaked as well,

As for your RAM, u just use divider and your ram wont OC .. thats all,, thx

i have a decent cooler. not the best, but it will definitely suffice. and afaik the ip35e is a decent mobo for OC'ing.

Duals, yes. Quads, not so much.

It's a P35 board, so FSB is limited. You seen to have reached 425FSB with a 45nm quad, that's pretty decent. I doubt that you could OC more on that board. Have to switch to an EP45-UD3P or something to clock higher. But then, your RAM could hold you back, although most DDR2-800 of decent specs will overclock to DDR2-900 (450FSB). So you could reach 3.6. But would that be worth paying for a new motherboard just for that? At 3.4Ghz with a quad, I doubt that there is any software that won't run on your machine, especially with 6GB of RAM.

If you want to take the Q9400 to the extreme (4.0 ghz) you won't go wrong with a gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p and a top tier heatsink like the megahalems.

Edit: just read Virtual Larry recommended the ga-ep45 as well. That is a classic 775 board for sure. I know I had a q9400 that would go to max 3.2ghz on a different board but clocked to a stable 3.75 on the ga-ep45-ud3p and could of gone more if I had a better heatsink.

The ga-ep45-ud3p supports crossfire the ga-ep45-ud3r is the same board minus crossfire. They are ddr2 boards. I've seen a few on the fs/ft forum cheap.

Yes it is and I had the same experience going from dual to quad core; I was able to get my Q9550 to just over 4Ghz after switching to the P45 after it would only do 3.4 on the P35.
