i want an iphone for everything except its at&T crap.
can i even buy the thing without having to sign up?

i'm not going to ask how to hack it here, i can google it, but i just want to know if its hard or not with the newest versions.

now i would go with an Touch instead, but if i got this correct, the iphone has a number of other features, like microphone for voice recording. cause i want to replace my PDA cause its browsing web is too slow.

also, while i'm at it. do internet pages load up pretty quick...like does it have enough memory to load pages without having to wait for each section to load when scrolling? My pda has 64mb's and is slow as heck and no more than 1 tab open at a time.

i'm still undecided to use touch or hack an Iphone, though i found hacked ones on ebay but are pricey. i think i need to review the features differences again and think about it.

The biggest differences between the iPod Touch and the iPhone is that the iPhone has 3G, GPS, Camera, and a built in Mic. The touch is noticeably slimmer.

You will save yourself quite a bit of money and headache by just getting a touch. The 2nd gen touch's can be used with the Apple In Ear Headphones which add a remote/mic/vol control to the headphone cord. Not the ideal solution compared to a built in mic, but not bad.

I believe the iPhone can be purchased sans contract at AT&T stores, but if I recall the price is around $500-600. You might be better off buying one with a contract for $199, then paying the $175 cancellation fee by terminating your AT&T service, but your still at over $400 once you add in the $36 activation fee.

If your really only going to use it as a PDA, stick with either a Touch or a used jailbroken iPhone.

And yes, the internet works fantastic on them. In fact when I just need to do some basic browsing, I rarely even grab my laptop anymore as the iPhone is more than enough to suffice.

thanks aphex. heck some of the jailbroken ones on ebay are in that $500-600 price range. i think i want it cause i may decide to use the Cell phone feature and could then just pick my own carrier...supposedly any carrier works but internet is a big deal to me and of course playing Chess on it, as i believe they have a chess game for it.

i suppose it doesnt have a memory card slot does it? would be nice to add more memory in the future.

They have a lot of chess games for it - the two top rated ones are "Deep Green ($8)" and Tom Kerrigan's "T Chess Pro" ($8) http://www.tchessgame.com/pro.php .

Yes, the price is high - but if it's any consolation, the resale value on them has been very good as well. My iPhone is actually worth more on Ebay than what I paid for it, after a year of use.

As far as "supposedly any carrier works" - all iPhones are GSM only. So, in the US, Verizon and Sprint will not work with an iPhone. The original iPhones are EDGE and GPRS for Internet. The new 3G iPhones don't do 3G on T-Mobile in the US. In Europe, an unlocked iPhone works pretty much with every carrier that I've heard of, and I had no problem using mine over there with several carriers.

There's no memory slot.

check your local craigslist for iphones... here, they range from 200 - 400 for an 8Gb 1st gen version.
