Interesting concept and a good evolution path for smartphone. But just thinking about the price makes me cringe....

The concept has been knocking around for a while, there was a Microsoft version that people were practically salivating over a couple of years ago. I'm just hoping that someone actually manages to pull the concept off and make a production device.

But yeah, the price of the V1 is going to be eye-watering if current flagships are any indication!

Generation 2 of this type of device will be very nice. I don't have high hopes for the initial model.

I don't have massively high hopes that it will ever appear in production tbh. It's pretty much exactly what I want though! :(

I'm baffled that Microsoft still didn't even attempt to make the Courier. Its not like anyone else really seriously tried it (well I guess Lenovo - ? - had that weird tablet thing with dual screens), and it would make a great Surface product.

For me though for this foldable into a phone device, I would want it to have 2-3 creases, so that we'd get 3-4 sections, where we'd get a bigger like widescreen tablet size when full unfolded, but then a more compact phone shaped thing. If you do 4 folds, you could get multiple, where it could get to phone size, then you could square it off so it'd be more book shaped/sized, then fully unfold it into tablet size.

Be careful what you wish for...

Have they proven they can make durable foldable screens yet? That seems to be the main limitation. Even slide out keyboards of yesteryear would wear poorly over time.

Timing of this story (I hesitate to call it news) seems to be in order to draw away attention from a certain recent smartphone announcment from another manufacturer...

It's an interesting concept, but I have a feeling it'll be many many years before there's ever a practical folding screen phone. Could be really cool though.
