My brother has a computer right next to his TV and we want to make it so that we can put a DVD in the computer but have the video and sound play through the TV and it's speakers. How can this be accomplished? I've got the video to work easily so far - it'll run fine through the RCAs or the S-video. Getting the sound to play through the TV equipment is the problem.

This computer has a Voodoo 3, Creative 12X DVD, Creative DXR3 decoder, and a SB Live! Value. The TV is a brand new Sony 32" flat screen, so it has all of the connections that a new TV has. We also have a Sony receiver that we could run things through if needed.

So my question is how can I get the sound to switch over to the TV when the video does? Can I do it easily with the equipment that we have? If not, what would I need to buy to make this work? PLEASE help. Thanks all :D

Just connect the line output of your sound card to the audio input that goes with the video input you are using (on the TV). So if you have the video connection from the computer to Video 1 on the TV, connect the line out from the sound card to the audio jacks for Video 1 on the TV. The line out from the sound card is probably a "mini-plug", you'll need an adapter from Radio Shack or other electronics stor to convert the single mini-plug into RCA-type connectors to hook up to the TV.

But will this allow me to switch from sound through computer speakers to sound through TV without having to switch plugs in the back of the computer? Thanks!

Just get a "Y" cable from Radio Shack that splits one mini-plug output into two. Connect one to your speakers, the other to the mini-plug->RCA converter and your TV.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Splitting outputs is fine. NEVER split inputs. You didn't say you were going to but I just thought I should add that.
