Want to wipe HDD on school-provided laptop before returning

They provided us restore discs.

Would you recommend just grabbing Darik's Boot 'n Nuke, running the standard (about 9 hour?) method, and then running the restore discs? Just want to make sure I do this the best way possible.

chances are a normal format c: would be fine but either boot nuke or any of those other things like it woudl be more then fine

Frankly I would just restore. I seriously doubt that anyone is going to spend the time and effort to look at whatever porn you used the school laptops for. 😉

and if you're paranoid about someone trying to undelete the files... after using the restore CD, just fill up the hard disk with some junk and delete it. Then do it again if you really want to be sure.

I suppose that would take substantially less time! I was just thinking, you never how tech savvy of a kid will get the laptop next.

Just dban and restore. They probably wouldn't want to spend the extra money trying to uncover your data (porn) when they can find other targets that don't know about dban for free. 🙂

Run something like Eraser on it.

Quick Erase if you are sane or short on time.

DoD if you are feeling paranoid.

Really paranoid -> take out drive, grind platters to a pulp, then heat the remains to remove the magnetic properties... 😛

Seriously, quick erase is perfectly fine. That will defeat any undelete program...
