Want to upgrade XP2100+. What is the next best for overclockability?

I have a A7N8X Deluxe nForce 2 board running 512MB PC3200 Corsair and a AMD Athlon XP2100+ overclocked to 2700 (13 x 166Mhz).

I bought the 2100 because it was at that point where 2100's and 1700's were highly clockable. You know what I am talking about. Like when the Celeron 300A's were almost guaranteed to hit 450Mhz. There are those few chips between every revision where they get really high numbers.

So what new CPU should I get that is the next best thing? I haven't been keeping up. What's the hot chip right now after the 2100?

Also, can I run the new 200Mhz FSB chips like the Barton 3200+? I heard that although the nForce2 board supports it, it would be really pushing it running at 200Mhz FSB.

Thanks for any and all help.

One of the popular choices right now is the AMD 2500+ Barton with the 333 FSB (166 x 2). By taking the 166 to 200 you'll turn that 2500+ Barton into 3200+. Note that since week 39 (generally) the multiplier is hard locked and wire tricks don't work. But you can still reach 3200 speeds by upping the FSB to 200 on ur mobo.

Would I bet able to do 200 Mhz on the Asus board if I haven't had much luck running over 170 currently? Although that could be because I am trying to get 133 to 200. Would something that is natively 166 run at 200 with little effort? What week or code should I look at when purchasing?

200 mhz fsb should be do-able with that mobo, make sure you have the latest bios if it's a rev 1 board.

I had to sneak up on 200 mhz on my rev 1, could not just jump from 166 to 200. I just worked the fsb up in 2-3 mhz increments till I got where I wanted it. using corsair XMC 3200 ram with a unlocked Barton 2500+

Osage, I don't think unlocked Barton's are available anymore. I plan on orderin an OEM 2500 from Newegg. Why would an unlocked multiplier even matter? If I don't plan on getting past 3200+ speeds, then stock multiplier x 200 mhz should be enough right? I have 512MB Corsair PC3200 Platinum. I plan on getting an identical stick for a total of 1GB. I think the ram should be fast enough.

If you pay me enough money I'll sell you my XP2500 that does 2.3 Ghz... I'd need enough to get an Athlon-64 though :D

Hey, man, as long as you're dreaming, see if he'll give you enough for it that you can afford an Athlon64 FX. ;)

edit: Wait, I've got a 2400 that'll do 2.4ghz! It wasn't for sell, but I would trade it for an FX...

you should be able to get more than 170FSB with that board and a XP2100+. maybe your memory is holding you back. both my XP2100's run 2.2ghz+. I run one at 13 X 170fsb on my Epox 8K5A2+ (KT333 mobo), and the other at 11 X 220fsb on a NF7S mobo. Both chips will run 11 X 220 on the Nforce 2 mobo. Of course you will have to up the voltage to your own comfort level. Going from 170 FSB to 200+ FSB will get you a boost with the 2100+ itself. I don't think the Barton will gain you anything with your current setup. Invest in some better memory first.

Untill you prove your memory is NOT limiting you to 170fsb, I would not make a move on a CPU that will gain you a marginal performance increase over the 2100+. Drop the multiplier to 9 and try to boot at 200fsb= 1800mhz is easily handled by the XP2100+. If it won't boot, you need better memory, and the Barton will gain you nothing. Like I said the 2100's are great OC'ers, and 2200- 2300mhz ain't out of the question on air. Both mine will run 2425mhz on water @ 1.9v. Not many 2500 Bartons will hit those levels even on water. If the 2100 can outrun a Barton by 100mhz, it will make up for the lower cache. PM me if you want to crank that 2100 up a little!!

yea im at 11.5x200 on my 8rda+ with twinmos pc3200. My cpu is a 2100+. You should seriously save up and grab yourself a new cpu in the futurethan now.

If your are already doing 13X166 (2158mhz) then drop the multiplier to 10.5 and go with 200fsb (2100mhz), or try 11X200 (2200mhz). What vcore are you currently running. If you can not reach 200 look to your memory or its timings, because NF2's love 200. If you want more then a 2500+ or 2600+ Bartons are the place to go. Do as JustStarting suggested and start at 9X200, to make sure your ram is not the limiting factor.

I'm stuck with the same as yourself. Getting bored though...want something new...but
nothing really jumps out at me..............can't complain about the set-up I have now....
