Hey all,

I would like to upgrade my current GPU, which is pretty old. I have a GTX 570 Twint Frozr II, and i was thinking about getting either the GTX 970, R9 390 or R9 390X. All MSI brands.

Which one would give me better potential, or shall i wait untill NVIDIA and AMD launches their new GPU's?

I am also planning to upgrade my current RAM, i was thinking about getting atleast 16gb and 2400mhz DDR3, downclocked to 2133mhz. Since my mobo can't handle higher mhz's.

My current specs are:

Case: Cooler Master CM 690 II with 4 fans
CPU: i5 2500k OC'ed to 4.4Ghz
Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2
Mobo: ASrock p67 Extreme 4
GPU: MSI GTX 570 Twin Frozr II
RAM: 8GB 1333Mhz
PSU: Corsair ATX750 watt

I play on a 1080p monitor, this won't change for some time to come. But i would probably like to have the possibility to upgrade in the future to a 1440p monitor.

Thanks in advance :D

I advice you to wait. Polaris 10 should be out in 3-4 months. Its a huge jump in efficiency and will probably have much higher performance.

I have almost the same specs as you, I-5 (4.5ghz) and had the same question. I was comming from a dual 7970 (non ghz) but wanted to try a freesync monitor.

Finally bit the bullet and got a 390 a month ago with the full intention of doing a full system upgrade once the new video cards come out.

I figure this 390 can tide me over for a year until the itch to upgrade becomes unbearable.

If its just a hold over card a used 290x or 390 is cheap enough for a years use.

Good luck

The used market where I am is thin, otherwise I'd get my claws on a used R9 390X 8GB and be set for quite a while coz I ain't be paying $600+ for it.

I'm waiting for the verdict on the GTX1070/1080, but I'm probably going to hold off for what AMD has coming.

Grab a 390 now. They're reasonably priced and the MSI model is constructed very well (I have one).

Regardless of how well Polaris performs a 390 should handle 1440P for long while and yes it'll consume more energy but that really only matters when you're actually playing games.

If you're playing for more than 3-4 hours per day and pay over 15 cents per KW go ahead and wait, otherwise it won't make much of a difference to your power bill.

Also we don't really know how much Polaris will cost or how good availability will be on launch. We also don't know how fast it will be, the only thing we know for certain is it'll be much more power efficient and support newer hardware standards (HDMI 2.0, Displayport 1.4).

If you're grabbing a 1440P monitor just make sure it's Freesync capable.

I'd personally wait, but out of the 3 I'd go with a 390 if a good deal pops up. I got my 390 for essentially $230 after selling the game and rebate.

I know i held on to a 570 for this long. There wasn't really anything game wise i played that used alot of GPU power, and some games i played on a console.

But now there are some games i play more on my PC, and my 570 is definitely showing his age in those games. And this year there are some upcomming titles i am going to buy.

I was planning on upgrading in the beginning of June. So far my choice would go to a R9 390, in my country they cost around $412 (€369) new.

June / July is when the new cards come out. WAIT for the new cards. You can still buy a 390 if the new cards dont stack up well against it. But I highly, highly doubt that a 390 will still be your best option when the new cards come out.

Be patient for literally 1 more month than your target at most and you will get cards which are 1) the first on FinFET 14/16nm, 2) first designed with finalized DX12 in mind
