Want to upgrade laptop RAM. Where to buy?

All the places you mentioned are great. Depending on where you live, I would even throw in TigerDirect since they do not charge tax to where I live and their prices are extremely competitive with Newegg which is a place that I can drive to.

I'm familiar with the HP G62. It uses built in graphics and you will want 8GB for full performance. Otherwise 4GB might be fine, but I doubt it'll be worth the hassle/money over 3GB.

Fry's currently has 8GB of DDR3 SO-DIMM 1333mhz for $72. Free shipping for orders over $23. Yes, it's generic. I think Newegg a few days ago had 8GB for $65. ebay is fine only if you can find a great deal from a North American seller. I assume you are in N.A. Nothing wrong with overseas. The issue is you don't want to deal with returns overseas even for something that you can slip into a padded letter sized envelope.

Kingston and Cruical will understandably be more expensive but if you are helping a family or friend you don't see often, then their extra cost is worth the headache for any warranty or compatibility issues. Both issues are rare, but it happens.

I meant swapping out the 1GB stick for 4GB, bringing it up to 6GB (2+4).
6GB total is plenty for this basic user.

I don't think I want to drop $72 on RAM,
as this is a $299 laptop that maxes out at 8GB for both slots.

So, any best prices for a 4GB stick ?

The laptop takes DDR3.
Can I use cheaper DDR2 or DDR?
Laptop is not a gaming device. Just email and youtube.

What's better 3GB of DDR3 or 6GB of DDR2?

If you just want 4GB, then forget it. Not worth it going up from 3GB. You are better off improving your youtube experience. AKA use Chrome with the Ghostery plugin and enable HTML5 support at youtube.com/html5.

DDR2 and DDR3 are non interchangeable. DDR and DDR2 are more expensive these days due to obsolescence.
As far as what brand to get I would say go with one that has a good reputation(Crucial, Mushkin, Kingston ect...).
Amazon, Ebay, Newegg are all good places to shop. Choose a store with a well known reputation with the best price and you should be fine.

Just to clarify I want to add 4GB to end up with double the current ram to 6GB...I think that's a big difference, no?

What did ghostery do?

6GB is fine then. Ghostery blocks ads, trackers, etc. Helps a lot with general web surfing and HELPS BIG TIME with p0rn surfing on computers that lack horsepower.

Ok, if anyone sees a good deal on 4GB DDR3, please post a link.
I installed Ghostery. Thanks for the tip.

SODimms rarely go on sale. A 4gig stick from a reputable manufacturer will cost around $35-$45 these days. This one seems to be reasonably priced. I've purchased this one for several laptops I own and they are still running strong. Shop around and you might find a better deal though.

What blows my mind is I purchased the second one from Newegg in 2012 for $20 shipped. It's now $46.....ram prices are crazy now.

bbhaag,
The $37 RAM says 1.35V with zero reviews.
The $44 RAM says 1.5V with 300+ 5-star reviews.
I'd rather spend the extra $7 and avoid problems.

How exactly do I read this pagefile monitoring window?
Which field tells me the amount of RAM I really need?
Is this just a percentage units, so it you've averaging 100%, you need more RAM?

You can assess how much information is written to virtual memory using the Performance Monitor.
This will give you an idea how much RAM you really need.

Reduce your virtual memory size to 512MB and set a ridiculous maximum to allow it to grow. That will tell you the maximum amount you need.
