I have a Dell Dimension XPS T550 with a 440BX AGP motherboard. I would like to upgrade the processor without having to buy a whole new system. What are my options? On Dell's site it lists the XPS T series as going up to 850MHZ so I was assuming I could just swap out the slot 1 processors. Is this possible? Thanks.

That's my problem. Where do I go to find out if it does support it? Is the 850 only coppermine or is there a Katmai version?

850 is the coppermine one! and there are no any different between katmai and coppermine board and i think your mobo will support the 850, but for safety u may ask your system manufacture about the mobo!

OK, here's the information I could find on my MB. Dell makes it hard to find the true identity.

PhoenixBios 4.0 Release 6.0
4S4EB2X0.10A.0017.P05
Bios Ver. A04

On the mother board: Dell Rev A04
0007073D-12461-95B-00WP
AA 722396-106

Stepping 3
Slot1 SECC2
Clock X 5.5

I may just get the 850 and try it, know any good sources that have a good return policy? Thanks again.

A good way to check to see if it will take a 850 MHz chip is to check the multiplier settings in the bios. Also, the motherboard MUST support the lower voltage requirements of Intel Coppermine CPU's. If it doesn't, you'll need a new motherboard. Dell's all use Intel mobo's -- good stability but not good for overclocking. :frown:

Check in the BIOS and see if there any core voltages displayed, probably not. You could also try a program like Motherboard Monitor, but it must support your board. I bet the core is set to 2.0 volts not the lower CU mine voltage. R.
