want to upgrade 8800gts

What is your resolution? PSU?

If you are going to want to take advantage of DX11, both nV and ATi should have new hardware available Q4.

resolution is 1440x900 right now, but want to upgrade. PSU is a 550w.
dx11 would be nice, but I am not spending $300 on a card so unless the new cards are gonna come out at $200 not going to be an option.
Plus I jumped early on the 8800gts and it never really ran DX10 all that great.

4890/GTX275 are the best "bang for the buck" options right now.

If rumours are true, the lower end ATi DX11 card (5850?) will be around $200. It is still mostly guessing at this point though.

Really you are so close to benchmarks and MSRP leaks from both sides, it cant hurt to wait until October, when 5XXX will have retail availablity, and GT300 will have leaked benchmarks and probably a launch date set.

how about actually listing ALL your specs? 1440 is a low res and unless you have a good dual or quad core cpu then upgrading your 8800gts to something much faster could just be a waste of money. also what 8800gts do you actually have at the moment? 320 640 or 512mb? really all of this info should have been in your op.

Let's also add: "What are you playing that your gts can't handle at that res?" If you're itching to spend money, I think a monitor upgrade would actually be better...

8800gts 320,
e6400 @ 2.8ghz
6 gigs pc6400 sync
p5q p45 mobo
nuuo 550w ps
sb audigy 2

most of the newer games are making my card chock pretty hard. I generally have to turn things way down.

well that card seems like it would be plenty for that res but I guess there are a couple of games where its not getting the job done. your cpu is okay but if you were to get something like a 4890 or gtx275 it would certainly need to be overclocked a bit to get the most out of those cards especially at such a low res.

His CPU should be just fine to push most games over the 30fps minimum. A 8800gts 320mb is barely enough for 1440*900 and only does the work for light gaming.

Having that said, definately wait for the new videocards from AMD. They should be coming soon 😉 Even if all they do is drive down prices from current gen vidcards.

it wasnt about his cpu being playable or not. it was about getting the most out of using a high end card. at such a low res if he is not going to oc then he would get about the same performance in many games with a gtx260/4870 that he would with a gtx275/4890. to be honest even a gtx260/4870 is more than enough at 1680 not to mention his low res of 1440.

So I see at frys I can get a 275 for $180 then add on a $30 MIR.
But should I wait for the dx11?
I could always spring for a new proc instead.

You're not a frequent upgrader. DirectX11 will last longer then a DX10 card. Do the math. AMD should have a full line-up, including something within your budget.
