How do I tell what kind of RAM cards to buy.

Where can i look either on the hardware or in the controll panel itself to know weather or not the cards i need to install need to be 133 or 100?

I am running Win 98 on a PIII 500mghrtz prcsr. i only have 128 right now and am looking to upgrade with ram being so cheap. Now how do i get the right stuff and not fry up my pc...Thanks for any help you can offer.

Well, you would want to check your motherboard manual to find out what type of RAM you need.

However, your 500Mhz processor is certainly running at 100X5, but I don't see any reason to buy PC100. PC133 should run just fine at 100 and has the ability to do 133 should you ever need it, also doesn't really cost any more.

You should still check your manual though, to find out what configurations you can take. Some motherboards have requirements about which slots can be propogated with what sizes, etc...

If you don't have a manual, look at your board for identifying features and then look for the company's website.

Crucial.com has a great memory selector. At their homepage, if you bought a PC prebuilt, you can click "Personal Computing" in the dropdown box, and continue on to find what memory your computer can get. It's fairly self-explanatory, and I think you can get what you need here. It's cheap, and you get 2nd day air from FedEx. Great stuff! I hope this was what you needed.

I second the Crucial.com.

Instead of buying from them if you have a Best Buy around buy your crucial ram there before Saturday and get 256Meg for $25 after rebate. I bought another 256Meg yesterday and they had plenty left at my local Best buy.
