I would like to try overclocking. I have never done it before.

I was thinking of upgrading my pc and trying to overclock. What would be my best choices for :

processor (I was thinking q6600)

motherboard (that won't be too hard to overclock for a beginer)

memory (no idea what would be best but need dd2)

power supply (no idea, but won't be going sli) I have a Antec 550w but no PCIe or mobo cables and I don't know if it is any good anymore

500 to 650 dollars is the budget for these 4 items

I have a 8800GTS to use for my new build. Will use hdd and dvd, case from my old pc.

The purpose of this build is two fold. I went to try Crysis demo and found out its not very pretty so I need to upgrade with the budget in mind. Second I always wanted to try overclocking. I don't plan to overclock much, nothing extreme, air cooling.

cpu - q6600 is a good choice. you'll definitely need a 3rd party heatsink (thermalright, zalman, etc) to get the temperatures down for overclocking. that right there is almost $260...

mobo - any gigabyte, asus, abit would do....just look for ones that have the features and prices that you want.

memory - again, corsair, g.skill (my personal fav), muskin, ocz, crucial have cheap and great 2x1GB ddr2-800 sticks. cant go wrong with any of them...ive had awesome luck with the g.skill 4-4-4-12 2x1GB ddr2-800 set in my own computer. most can be found under $75.

psu - enermax, antec earthwatts, pcp&c (expensive), ocz, fortron - any name brand is good. just make sure you dont go cheapo-depo on this component though. you want a good, reliable psu and dont be hesistant to spent a bit more for a good psu.

hopefully that helped!

thanks

I just seen the E6750 processor for only $189 are those overclockable? --nvm I just seen that the q6600 beats that one

not a quad but I dont' really care, just want something with a little room for overclocking

ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX 89$ is what I am currently looking at,

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 for only 69.99 <--nvm not the same timings ( I am a bit lost on that...)

wow prices have really come down since I last upgraded :)

I do have the thermal take watercooling unit on my current system, used to have problems with heat even with the 7700 Zalman, so that should work with my new processor.

Some of you maybe wondering why I am so uncertain about this. I tried overclocking the 3.8 pentium, but it never worked, even the smallest overclock would freeze the pc. I am not sure to this day what the problem was. I tend to think it was just that the parts didnt' work well with each other.

K going to read the overclocking thread and sleep on it, memory I am not so sure about yet, mobo will be the abit above and a q6600 processor.

You can get the IP35 (has firewire & raid unlike the IP35-E) for $95 after MIR from Mwave.

For gaming, quad core is not really necessary yet, you are probably better off with an e6750 clocked higher than you could go with a quad (3.4-3.6GHz is usually doable with a Tuniq Tower or Ultra-120 Extreme). Or better yet, wait until mid/late January when the Penryn dual/quad core processors are released: they will run cooler, have more cache (this affects gaming performance directly) and should also overclock significantly better than the Conroe chips out there now. People with early samples are seeing >4GHz from Penryn chips on air cooling. :Q

Thank you for help Secretanchitman and Denithor.

After much reading, this is what I decided to buy:

Core 2 Q6600 279$ (at microcenter, hopefully they let me pick out the G0 step)
The reason I didnt' end up going with the c2d e6750? so I can closely follow the instructions in the stickie thread on overclocking :)

power supply Antec True power trio 650W 129$ (newegg)
memory crucial ballistix 2x1gb ddr2 800 dual channel kit 75$ (newegg)
mobo Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P 154.99$ (newegg)

I will sleep on it one more night and probably pull the trigger tomorrow, if there are no objections from any of you overclockers.

will have to read up on how to tell the stepping on a retail package yet

Edited , Thanks VirtualLarry :) G0 not B0

You wanted G0 step, not B3 step.
S-spec of SLACR (printed on the box)

a dual core will Overclock better than a quad and make less heat. go with the 6750 or some dual core. i've got a 2180 ($90) with an abitPro board, it's at 3Ghz. the pro is the same as the ip35-e, so i'd recommend that...or go with a 4500 series and you should be able to hit 3.4Ghz~

don't waste your money on a quad core, they just arn't necessary now and they're pricey. buy one next summer or something when the prices fall!!
