Want to transfer from Grove City College to U of Pitt main next year as a sophomore studying computer engineering.

It was a tough decision for awhile but now I am positive I want to go. I applied Thursday.

Since I have fewer than 24 credits completed I believe they will look at my high school transcript as well as my GCC transcript. I graduated 3rd in my HS class of 240 students with a 3.9 GPA and AP calc credit. I got a 1250 on my SATs. I got a 2.96 GPA my first semester here at GCC in electrical engineering.

What do you think my odds are of getting accepted?

I am in the Engineering program at Pitt (actually I started at a Pitt branch campus taking my freshman engineering classes (physics, calc, engineering seminar, etc)) and I will be up at Pitt Main next semester . Obviously Pitt is a bigger school and generally the classes will be probably a little harder, but I had a chance to meet one of the head EE teachers up there (He is chinese). He seems to be a pretty nice and knowledgable guy, though it was kind of hard understanding him just in normal chit-chat, though that is like all universities. I would give it a  for the transfer. If you haven't already, perhaps you can look at some stuff at http://www.engr.pitt.edu/electrical/index.html

I wouldn't think for a minute the classes would be harder than at a private school like GCC. Probably sort of similar actually.

That is one thing I do enjoy at GCC is the lack of foreign professors. Everyone speaks perfect English. :)

Basically I'd only be transferring for the city life. But I don't want to be sacrificing anything.

college is, for the most part, what you put into it. if you want to be a good engineer then you need to read and understand the material assigned in class as well as other, non-assigned reading. you need to take it upon yourself to not just memorize the material but know it well enough to make use of it. it doesnt really matter where you go for undergrad as long as the prorgam is accredited and you have a hard work ethic.

This isn't simply about what college will get me the most academically. It's about which college is going to give me a better next three years, and still prepare me well for the future.

I mainly want to transfer to Pitt due to the city life. I want to live in the city and have tons of social opportunities. OTOH, I'm thinking the switch would be bad, because I'm not sure if Pitt will set me up as well for the future as Grove City. Tuition may be more or less, depending on aid. And I'd also have to give up my laptop since GCC gave it to me.

And then, I could get there, and end up not being any more satisfied with the social situation than I am here now. But then again, if I don't switch, I might always be longing for that environment and wish I had.

Being in the city, I would say you would have a lot more to do there, and of course party

No Duq, they don't have engineering.

Not interested in PSU Erie, don't want to go out to main.

It IS in the ghetto, hmm...

It's a pretty good school, though, right?

To me Pitt might be slightly above average, but I wouldn't consider it anything extra special.

Penn State all the way.

PSU has awesome football to attend, and we all know Pitt just gets beat down the Mountaineers year after year ;)

I just graduated from the Computer Engineering program at Pitt and I'm quite pleased with the education I recieved. What's your major? I know the Electricial and Computer Engineering (ECE) department has some really top notch professors.

Living in Oakland will be a big change from Grove City. It's a little dirty but, frankly, I loved every minute of it. No matter what you're into you can probably find someone else who's into it. If you like to party there's atwood street. If you're into sports there's a ton of intramural sports to participate in. There's always a bunch of shows and movies throughout the year. Overall, I'd say it's pretty sweet.

Nice! I am an EE major planning to specialize in CE, so I guess I'm right with you on that one. GCC offers a good education, but yeah, Pittsburgh sounds so much more appealing. But I would be living in the dorms, would it be terrible?

I graduated from the Bradford Campus... I really loved it there; it was the only (of 6) school that I really enjoyed being on the campus of. For what it's worth, I thought the engineering students on our campus were particularly weak students who were on a 5 year plan (most of them, not all of them) - if you're looking into engineering. i.e. It would be easy to stand out against them. (Many were in a diff eq's class with me... the other math/education major and I had 100 averages; the rest of the students were engineering students; the 3rd highest grade was a C) Still, the profs there were excellent and very approachable.

Dorms aren't too bad. You know which one you'd be in, or have you not gotten that far yet? Apartments in South Oakland are petty cheap too. If you're planning on taking any electronics courses I'd recomend Dr. El Nokali. He was one of those professors that is tough but you're glad he was cause you learned alot. They also have a really ineteresting Embedded Systems course.
