i've been sailing a few times, but only with people who know what they are doing. I am comfortable with someone who knows what they're doing, but if conditions turned sour I wouldnt be comfortable with my current knowledge on what to do.

Anyone in the area reccomend a place that doesn't rape on lesson fee's?

I love sailing and have been doing it since I was old enough to swim.

Sorry, I can't help you on the lessons thing. I'm in SoCal and not very familiar with Virginia.

Edit-You might want to pick up a guide to sailing. They can be useful for someone trying to learn about sailing. There's loads of information in there that can at least help you when it comes time to taking lessons.

Do you plan on buying a boat?

I own a hobie cat 18, I've never sailed it, it was given to me by an ex gf's dad, who hadn't used it in years, put new tires on the trailer, and gave me the boat, sails and everything. I dont know the condition of them, this weekend I'm getting it all out to take a look at it.

Any suggestion on sailing books?

Looks like a pretty useful guide.

You might look for something more specific to multi-hull boats but the principles are the same really. You could always volunteer to crew with people to get used to sailing and learn from someone for free that way. I crewed on a 30' Pearson on Lake Ontario for a season when I was in my early 20s.

I love sailing and would really like to own a sailboat someday.

Thanks for the link.

Will sailing with a crew get me the certifications needed to charter a boat?

My ideal goal is that myself and a friend of mine will have our proper certs to charter a boat, we plan to rent onen for a day next summer (prolly a 30') while at the beach in NC.

I too would like to own a bigger boat someday.

I think part of my problem is that sailing 'season' is ending here in VA. Especially for my hobie ;) Or at least, lessons stop in october and don't start til April.

Beats me. I don't have any official certifications but usually they will just ask you what your sailing experience is and if they think you have the experience they don't hassle you about it.

I guess most of the places i've been looking at renting from state they require you to have certification of certain levels, like bareboat certifications...

I'll look into it though, thanks! :)

My Mom lived on this boat for 10 years.

She sailed it from Florida to New York and back down again. She and her husband also sailed it as far as Brazil and they've done quite a bit of cruising in the Bahamas. I've sailed on it a number of times but only for a few days at a time.

I've sailed a 38' Down Eastern to Catalina Island a number of times also living on the boat for a few days. Catalina is about 40 miles from Oceanside Harbor, off the coast of SoCal.

ouch...looking into the certification courses and stuff...it looks like to get bareboat chartering it'd cost me upwards of $2500 for about 7 days worth of lessons....what the hell!

There's a Sailing Club at the World Bank in DC and I am pretty sure I can refer a non-staff to it. I'll PM you once I find out.
