Want to start computer company, where to get wholesale parts/advertise locally?

Hello all.
I want to start a business to make custom computers for people. Do you think this is doable if I can make a computer for myself with no problems? This is not for the computer buff, just the average person. If I decide to do it, where can i get parts wholesale, and if I live in a big city (Dallas, TX), where would you reccommend that I advertise? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you thought this through? When you build custom systems, the customer may see you as their "tech support" even though you didn't tell them. If anything happens, they'll call YOU first...

the only downside i see to that is "average" people generally want to buy a computer with a good warranty and good tech support. i would be worried about "ID10T errors" and the people that i sold computers too bugging me all the time. BTW i know it happens cuase my sister always seems to screw her computer up and I have to fix it. Of course it eats up my time and I dont get any profit out of it

Edit:Doh looks like trevor beat me to it

Yah I have considered the thing about tech support, I have plenty of time on my hands, and as long as its email, I can answer it easily. I am having trouble finding a place to buy wholesale parts. Where could I do that? Any custom builders on the board can help me?

There's no money in it. The average person either:

A) Knows someone like you (or me, or any of the other 80,000 people on this forum) who will do it for them at cost.

B) Would rather pick a big brand name like IBM or DELL because of tech support reasons.

Also - if you build them, then you have to support them, which is no fun. Try explaining for the 6th time to some dumb person how to install video drivers. Or, wait till someone calls up and asks why they can't get thier email - and expects you to fix it.

I am only like 16 and my parents are supporting me. Therefore I have no worries whether the business makes it or not. If anything, I will give tech support for like 6 months via email. I am not worried about it, because if it fails, its not a big deal. I would just like to experiment and get some experience. I am pretty able to build a computer, and troubleshoot the majority of problems the average user is going to have. (I have to deal with my grandmother and my mom 🙂 ) Anyway, I am just looking ot find a place to get cheap parts. Anyone know of such a place?

it's already been posted, but the average joe will not make any money, at all

wholesalers will probably sell you goods for about as much as retailer buying stuff in bulk could sell you them for

unless you have money screaming outta yer ass its just not worth it

and if something breaks, they're gonna call you first, and that money goes straight outta yer pocket

RyanB18,

Let's see. You're 16 years old, and you think that since you "built a computer for yourself", you can go in to business. But, you're "not worried about it, because if it fails, its not a big deal." Kid, you don't have a snowball's chance in hell.

Do all of the legitimate businesses a favor, and go back to playing CS.

HEHE!!!!!!!!!!

Btw, your parents bought you winxp? How about them buying a seperate license for each computer you build!

Also: You can't only offer email support. People will want to call you on the phone. I mean - how are you going to help someone over email when thier problem is "This modem you sold me - it won't connect to the internet"?

Why are you being so condescending? I dont want this to be a huge business, just for like some family members/friends. Why do you think you are better than me just becuase you are older? In a world of anonymity (i.e. the internet), age means nothing.

<< Why are you being so condescending? >>

Because I get tired of cleaning up after builders like you who have the attitude "what the hell, if it don't work out, no biggie", and leaving their customers holding the bag and chewing on the bad taste left in their mouth.

<< Why do you think you are better than me just becuase you are older? >>

It has nothing to do with your age, and everything to do with your lack of maturity (which may very well be due to your age).

I woudlnt be serving mass public if you would read my earlier post. I would just be doing this for family and friends. All i came to this forum was to ask for advice about wholesalers, and now that I know it is similar price to get it online, I am done with this topic. Thank you to those who have been courteous.

I read your post. Here, let me quote it back to you:

<< I want to start a business to make custom computers for people. >>

Now, it has becomes:

<< I would just be doing this for family and friends. >>

Which is a completely different animal; it is a HOBBY, not a business. Had you asked about a hobby, my response would not have been as it was.

You know, everybody here is giving you the straight scoop. if you accept money for a computer you must support it...even when doing so costs you profit or cuts into time you should be using to study, date or have a life. It's a learning process that takes time. When I first started I had a system blow up on me, heck we ate mac and cheese here for a couple weeks
because I needed to stand by my warranty and replace that rig no matter what.

Go and be 16,build your own rigs, get a job someplace where you can learn and the hardware comes out of the company's dime.

I noticed the story switch too. Why would you want to advertise building computers for you family?

I can see a sign as a drive into Dallas on the Interstate, COMPUTERS ONLY FOR THE FAMILY OF (whatever your name is) BEST PRICES IN TOWN!
