want to share files with my neighbor

ok so im moving in an apartment across the hall from my friend and i want to be able to make a public folder so we can both listen to whatever is in my music folder and such. I plan on getting my own internet connection though because i don't want to steal internet because that would be illegal.

Is there a way that i can share a folder with him but still use my own internet connection? and also vice versa?

im sure theres something illegal about streaming music but im ok with that but not ok with stealing his internet connection.

You can create through the Internet VPN connection to his computer and he can create a folder with permission that he would share with you.

Alternativelly you both can use Hamachi or Logmein for the same purpose.

You could use a Microsoft Live SkyDrive for sharing. That'll keep the neighbor off your network, but give secure sharing.

And just because you don't care if it's illegal doesn't make it legal.

Honestly, If you both want simultaneous access of one specific Music folder, Hamachi is the easiest way to do it. With Dropbox, the files have to be uploaded to the web, which, if you think about it, is a useless step for what you want to do.

If it was me, Hamachi would be my only option. Nothing else makes sense.

If you both have WI-FI, just add a second wireless NIC to your PC's and set static ip's with no gateway. Using the second card, connect to your friends router. Then use windows firewall (or a better one) to control access to just one folder you wish to share. Just be sure you are both using different subnets.

I would do it locally so you don't have MP3's flying across the internet, just have a box that accesses his internet connection via wireless and bridge it to your network. Just ensure you both are using different IP ranges. You'd create two network segments, basically. Setup firewall at both ends to limit access.

So something like:

(your network: 192.168.1.0/24) ==== [firewall] ===== (192.168.2.0/24 network) ==== [wireless signal] ==== neighboor (192.168.3.0/24)

The firewall's outside would have a port open to an FTP or w/e that you have the files shared on. It would have a wired card that is hooked to your router and a wireless card using your neighboor's net. You could add a third nic as default gateway to use your own internet, or it could just go through your router. Depends how you connect/configure stuff.

Using his net wont be illegal, but transfering MP3s will - so keep those on your network - not on the internet (like what homachi/vpn/filedrop etc would do)

Except both Hamachi and a VPN are encrypted, and are far simpler to setup then your proposal. Nobody is going to know what you are sending/receiving over those connections.

hey i was just wondering how its not illegal to use his net?

I mean essentially its the same as stealing his cable TV. or am i wrong?

It would not be illegal to connect to his wireless router to share files since you would have his permission to do so. It is, however, against the terms of service of most ISPs to share residential Internet access between multiple dwellings. In other words, with his permission you can access his network but you can't use his Internet.

Connecting Networks together with permission is Not illegal.

The way it is used after it is connected might be illegal, depending on what it is used for.

I seriously doubt it's illegal for two residences to share one internet connection, although it probably does violate the ISP's terms of service. But violating terms of service isn't "illegal" - I'd be surprised if there is a law against it - it's a breach of contract, which could have civil ramifications, but not criminal.

Even if he DOES use his internet, I doubt they can track that. It will still be coming out from same mac/IP anyway.

Legal vs. Illegal, Right vs. Wrong, are not defined by the probability of getting caught.

i look at it this way.

I get cable and internet from comcast

stealing cable from them it IS illegal

so stealing internet is the same thing right?
