want to share 56k connection--but what about the throughput?

I'm looking to split a 56k connection so me and my sister can surf and download at the same time. As I undestand it, here are my options:

1) 56k LAN modem/router--haven't seen any routers, but I know 3 com makes the office connect modem that splits 56k. It's expen$ive, but I have seen it going for less on e-bay.

2) Freesco (!)--I really want to do this since I've got an old p133 lined up for just this purpose. Also, no computer geek is complete without some working knowledge of linux.

3) get another phoneline and another dialup account

4) wait for broadband/get idsl--I might be able to collect social security before broadband gets here (other than satellite, which my bro has, and which I REFUSE to get, since his d/l speeds vary too much to be classified truly as broadband); idsl would be my choice in a heartbeat if it weren't so ridiculously expensive. Ditto for idsn.

So my question is: what kind of throughput can I expect from these choices, particularly a LAN modem vs. Freesco? My sis likes to surf the web and instant message, and I want to download and read the anandtech forums. Is the bandwith split right down the middle, or does one comp get more speed depending on what it is doing? Finally, if anyone out there had the same problem; how did you fix it? I understand that there are pieces of software that allow a comp to act as a proxy; but my experience with this was not good (too slow and disconnects).

Do NOT get those External hardware 56k routers. Since they cost heaps and they dont last long.

The best way I see it is to get 2 NIC. One in your comp with the modem, you in your sis's comp. Then run ICS. I think this is the best way because if you upgrade to broadband, this internet sharing method will still work flawlessly.

Do not expect much speed though. On a 56k connection, they do not tend to go higher than 6kbyte/s download speed.

The SMC barricade can split a 56k. The four port is about $90 and can be used later as a dsl router.
