Want To Setup Security Cam For Garage..

I wanted to setup a small Security Cam for my Garage. I wanted it to be able to connect it to my PC, so i can see whats going on right at my desktop.

I want the setup to be as cheap as possible.

Also, i need to be able to see people in the dark and stuff.

I would only need 1 camera.

If you guys have any suggestions on what things i need and where to buy it, that would be great.

THanks.

Well, X10 has a wireless camera for about $75 I believe. It has a range of up to 75' I believe.

The problem is the lighting. No 'inexpensive' camera will work in a low-light environment. There has to be some light for the camera to pick up motion and to record it properly.

vi_edit: can you recommend something that does record under low light?

Its because those theives come at night, and its no use to me if i can't see them.

=)

One suggestion is to buy one of the $30 motion detector guard lights that flip on when they sense motion. Then, have your camera set up to record motion. When the light detects motion, it will turn on providing enough light for the camera to record properly.

The whole setup could probably be done for under $150.

vi_edit: sounds like a good idea. But i would have to do electrical wiring which i do not know how to do. BUt i like that idea. sounds like the best way to setup something i am looking for.

Thanks.

Wiring shouldn't be that big of a problem.

I know that they make some solar powered security lights. My parents have one of these hanging above their garage. It charges during the day and will stay charged for a week or two before it needs to be rejuiced.

As far as I know, the cameras are wireless. You simply pop in the battery pack, mount them to the wall, and then set them up via software on a computer. They have a 75' range. As long as the computer is within 75' of the camera, you should be fine. You can set up the camera to record once motion is detected, and then just record it as a movie on the computer.

Really though, I think that having that light kick on will make those thieving turds think twice about stealing something. Then, if they continue on with their acts, just show the video footage to the police department.

what could possibly be in your garage that makes thieves come back time after time to steal?

anyways, vi_edit has a good idea. the wiring for the motion detector switch is really easy. just make sure that you turn off the power in your garage before installing it. 🙂

Get the motion sensing light switches.
They hook in real easy to the existing socket, they turn on the light when they see movement. they cost around $15-$20.

Some places to check out:
Hosfelt Electronics
Electronic Goldmine
All Electronics

I'm ordering from Hosfelt and Electronic Goldmine in a week or two; I'll check trough them sometime soon for anything that might be good.

Shotgun traps would eliminate the need for a camera - they go off, alerting you to someone's presence. Just listen for the sound of a large, fleshy object hitting the ground. Then you can go ID whatever wandered in at your liesure. And rest assured, they won't be back. 🙂

If you get a TV Card, you can use the RCA connectors of most video cameras. There's a program somewhere called Gotcha - it is a motion detector for the PC basically. It analyzes video input, and when it senses motion, it can sound an alarm, and start recording.

In my experience, the thieves used the motion triggered light to be able to see better while they stole my stereo! Good thing they didn't like the police dog much. Still doing time...

Another motion triggered cam program is Homewatcher.
