Here, I'll explain my situation. I currently have a cable modem downstairs, and the XBOX upstairs. I have the XBOX live starter kit, and if my parents said my grades were good, which they are, then they'll buy me the router setup. Well, enough of the back story. I want to play XBOX live. Since my XBOX is upstairs, and my cable modem is downstairs, my options are limited. I know I need a wireless router, but what else do I need? Thanks a lot..

If you have an external cable modem your best bet is to buy a wireless router and set it up. If it's an internal modem you're going to have bigger problems. Your best bet would be to enable Internet Connection Sharing and then put in another network card, run that through a switch, add a wireless access point to the switch, connect the XBOX to the Access point. You can get more information in the networking forums.
Sorry I'm not so swell with computers, but I have a question. Running the REGULAR connection(not the wireless) on my computer connection(which will be right next to the router) will work? I won't have to buy anything else, except for a wireless router with a switch? Sorrry if i sound stupid..
I guess I don't understand what you're trying to do. Are you going to go from the cable modem to the router and then the router to your computer? If that's the case, you won't need a switch. You just buy a combination Wireless AP/router, plug the wired ethernet from the router to your computer and then configure the wireless component for whichever wireless devices you want to connect to the wireless router.

Nope. Both Linksys and D-link claim to have the first XBOX/gaming-centric wireless bridges. I'm sure there are more by now because ANY wireless bridge should work. In fact, if you have another PC upstairs running XP Pro, just connect the network card to the XBOX, select both connections and choose "bridge." You can share the Internet connection from downstairs the same way without an access point (Ad-Hoc/Peer-to-Peer) if your network is configured correctly (NAT/ICS/DHCP).
how are you intending on having you computer AND Xbox on the net...router from the cable modem? using the comptuer as a server?...
first off im assuming the xbox live setup has an ethernet controller or something? as in it hooks up via ethernet
if you decide to get a router setup, find a cheap cable/dsl router...then get 2 HPNA to ethernet bridge units from staples.com, netgear model PE102...each are $184.99 BEFORE pricematch...pricematch the 2 units to the price of 2 units + shipping at www.buynetgear.com...buyneatgear.com has them for $80 each, and there is $11.53 shipping on it (i got it when shipping was $12.30 like one week ago...)...
Staples total: $369.98 (before tax)
Buynetgear total: $171.53 (includes $11.53 shipping)
Difference: $198.45
10% difference: $19.845
Total at end: $151.685
Because the pricematch is SO LARGE (i PM'd only one unit, still, the difference was a smidge under $100) then have to send it up to higher level to get it passes...ends up Staples corporate passes it. They call you back in 2 days telling you how it goes. They gave me a ridiculous pricematch of $126.51 (instead of the expected $83.02 for one unit)...i called them up, they routed me to staples corporate and i got the $43.49 in credit. Works great to convert phoneline to ethernet.
hook up one PE102 unit to the router and into the phoneline...(make sure you can have both units on the same phoneline, units wont work if not on same phoneline)...then plug the other PE102 into the phonline and the Xbox live ethernet controller...
Should work like gold.

I paid only $80 for my wireless setup. XBOX is bridged with a PC in one room and wirelessly bridged to my other PC with the cable modem. I take the card out when I don't need it there and go online wirelessly with my laptop (The desktops use PCMCIA adapters; also included in the $80). The speed may not be close to HomePNA or powerline networking but it is perfectly adequate for broadband. I only have 1 phone jack in the house and my outlets are overloaded anyway 🙂 EDIT: I see your solution wasn't really much faster anyway... Just a whole lot more expensive! 802.11b is advertised at 11Mbps but that isn't really the true speed. The XBOX will NEVER need more than the broadband connection can pipe to and from it unless you are trying to use "systemlink" between two local XBOXes which happen to be too far away for wires. 😀 /EDIT
Belkin had these cards for $39.99 each after rebate and if you bought them at Office Max you got a free PCI adapter with each card. They are also capable of running as an access point with Linux drivers.

your wireless solution is so much cheaper because you are running the wireless thru a computer...
If he had a comptuer next to the Xbox and/or was choosing to run the computer next to the cable modem as a server (no router needed) this setup could be done for under $50...
Since the xbox is standalone, he needs the bridge for a phoneline solution...
SO if he runs the computer next to the cable modem as a router...all he would need is a $9 HPNA PCI card and the PE102 bridge...$90 before taxes...
