Want to replace the fan for my FX5700

So, I've been seeing intermittent failures, black screens and rebooting on my computer while playing various games. Then one day I look in my case and dangling by a cord inside my case was the fan to my video card. I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to do that......

I tried getting it back in there and spinning and no go.. So, my quesiton is, is it possible to replace this fan? I can remove the heat sync just fine and it's not glued on, just a little arctic sivler in there. How would one go about making sure the power connector is the right type and selecting a new fan/sync for this card?

Get a cheap card off Ebay, or go to your local pc shop and ask them if they have any duff 5700's lying about [unlikely, as they would send them back], you never know

Short answer is yes, it can be done.

Coolermaster, thermaltake and some of the other "cooling" vendors I think carry compatible heatsinks/fans.

the ugly part is getting the thermal GLUE (not paste) off the chip then putting some glue or paste back on.

I can't help much more than this. You might want to try a (gasp) repost over in hardware or video. Someone who's more familiar might be able to help.

Heh true. There actually wasn't any glue on the card, it was just held in by pins so that's not a problem, just a little thermal compound which I would want on there anyway.

Cool! I think you got lucky. Glue sucks. You've already got thermal paste for your CPUs I'm guessing. Just snag a new fan. Newegg sells em. Might have to check w/ some of the "cooler" vendors to figure out which model. Last time I had to do this was with a GF3 Ti500 and the fans were all pretty much that standard "northbridge" kinda fan back then. Lots of variants now.
