Want to reinstall XP, but no drivers on HP Site.

I know there's software to pull off the drivers. I just don't know the names.

MS' Windows Home Server does it automatically every night, putting all the drivers into a folder with rest of the backups. So it's definitely possible.

Whoops. I forgot that WHS only grabs the disk-related and network-related drivers, which are the ones that are abolutely needed for the restore process. They don't bother with sound or other drivers, since those will automatically be restored from the system image.

Generally, there're only a limited number of devices (such as sound chips) that are used on large numbers of PCs. In most cases you can discover the make/model of the controllers used on the motherboard and track down the drivers either from the maker of the controllers or from drivers offered by the PC maker for similar motherboards that they DO list drivers for.

I have yet to see a motherboard where I couldn't locate device drivers. But sometimes it takes a while. Dell is easy. But HP has made PCs where all the device drivers aren't present for a particular model. Sometimes you can figure out the motherboard that HP uses (they don't make their own consumer boards, they buy boards from major motherboard makers) and go directly to that motherboard maker's site for drivers.

Ok cool. This is such an old machine it's almost not worth it, but I'm still gonna try.

Thanks again.

And I forgot the HUGE advantage that you have. Since you have a working PC, you can make a list of every device installed on the PC (from Device Manager) and verify in advance that you can locate drivers for that device.

If you want to be 100% sure, you can even "Update" the device drivers for questionable devices and test the results. If you've made a mistake, you can usually "Roll Back" the device driver to the previous (working) version.

Ok thanks. I will do that before I try the install. Either way, something has to be done, it's pretty unusable as is.

I assume you no longer have the recovery cd which contains the drivers?
according to thier manual you can get a replacement by calling their support #

worth a try.
I usually have been able to find drivers for old machines by going to places like driversguide.com any info you pull off the hardware about who made it will make your search easier...gl

PS.. if your not stuck on windows, linux may be an option for you although I would stay with a light distro I recently installed Legacy OS on an old Pentium 1 and had pretty good results. Its a puppy linux derivative.

It is possible that all the drivers for that machine are present in XP SP3. That may be why the do not offer them for download.

I was thinking that in the back of my head, and wondering if it's worth taking the risk. I'm trying to refurbish these for a buy/sell store. They aren't looking to put much into them. And honestly, I don't think they're even worth selling. They are about worn out as it is. This same laptop seems to have a problem with the ballast or backlight. It randomly goes dim.
