want to reformat old win98 laptop

or will i need to do some fancy stuff? The laptop has a cdrom drive. it may have a floppy drive. It's currently running Win98 and the question is if I pop in the windows xp disc, can it just boot from there? thanks

Should work. I have a P3 550 Mhz and 512MB RAM running XP just fine. Sure it's slow, but it works.

thanks a lot guys. it's an old dell.... P2 400mhz with 128mb of RAM. This is going to be quite interesting....

128 is gonna hurt a bit. If you could get to just 256 you would be in much better shape.

512 and you would eliminate memory as a bottleneck altogether (which would then shift to that cpu of course :p )


Ask around (forums, work, buddies) and you should be able to pickup a free stick of 128 somewhere.

I wouldn't install XP on that machine. It's going to be dog-slow.

If I may, I suggest a light Linux distro instead, like Xubuntu or Damn Small Linux.

Damn Small Linux is a bit less user friendly than Xubuntu, but it should fly on that old laptop of yours.
