Won't I be able to appreciate that more after I read the rest of the books?

Should I read the Hobbit first or should I read the first book from the trilogy?

Yeah...
Hobbit > Lord of the Rings > Simarillion
And for the love of God don't get the books that were "edited" or whatnot by Tolkien's dick of a son.

The Silmarillion is the Genesis of Middle-Earth. There are some things in it that lead up to the trilogy, I would read it first. It describes the creation, God, his servants, how the elves, dwarves, humans, and whatever come about. How life is changed in the 1st and 2nd ages(LotR is end of 3rd age). It's kinda neat.

If you want to be completely turned off to Tolkein and never read the trilogy, read Silmarillion first. Yawn.
