Want to play a good RTS

I have not played a good RTS in a while. I recently bought the Command and Conquer pack but I cannot get into any of the newer C&C that were released after Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. I should mention that I also liked Rise of Nations and Stronghold quite a bit. I also did not like the newer Stronghold game though.

So, are there similar RTS games out there to the older C&C games, RoN and Stronghold? I just don't want similarity but something that has good gameplay. I would appreciate any response. Thanks.

Unfortunately, good new RTS games have basically gone the way of the dodo bird.

Some good older games would be Supreme Commander/Forged Alliance, the Dawn of War series, Company of Heroes (not the new COH 2).

Other RTS games that I liked are the Battle for Middle Earth series, AOE 3 (many will disagree), and I think the name of it was Universe at War, Earth Assault.

Edit: and then there is always Starcraft and SC 2.

Men of War: Assault Squad 2 is out in a week or so.

Generally speaking, the Men of War series is fairly terrible for single player, but some of the best multiplayer RTS games around. Far far better than Company of Heroes.

Red Alert 3 is really fun for a playthrough co op with a friend but it's not so great for skirmishes and versus.

I love Company of Heroes. The sequel is basically the same, except more.

It's also badly optimized, so you need to take that into account, you need a nice PC to run it in high settings.

Try one of the Wargame titles. Really enjoyed European Escalation, and while I haven't tried Airland Battle yet, I've heard good things about it.

They're RTS, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Gives you a chance to plan out your moves and strategize without having to perform actions at a million miles an hour.

To note is that they aren't base-builders, they're all about squads.

It is so weird seeing those mentioned as "old."

I still prefer the Dune* series myself - Dune II and Emperor: Battle for Dune were good classic RTS games. I used to own them, no idea if I've still got them.
Seriously - I just have never been able to get into other RTS games the way I did Battle for Dune. The dev for that game was responsible for most of the now older Command and Conquer games; even while they were very similar, I couldn't get into them as well.

I did play one of the Supreme Commander games but never got through it.

And I'm sure as hell worthless in any RTS in multiplayer.

I was enjoying the World in Conflict games, but I think I suffered from a typical affliction of mine: I toss a ton of time into it at first, then I kind of either stop playing or I get distracted with a new title that I obsess over for awhile.
I should give that game another go - good armored fun.

*it does help I absolutely love the Dune books and the Sci-Fi mini-series (both). :)

Act Of War is somewhat similar to C&C. But I like it a LOT better.
The MP is dead though, but the campaign is damn good and I can do 3 or 4 skirmishes a day without even trying.

Warzone 2100 is pretty nice, allows you to make a ridiculous number of units customizations. (turret, propulsion, body...)
It is also free these days. wz2100.net
MP looks to be active still, and it works on 64bit machines just fine (linux / mac / windows).

you know, i never could beat that game. on the playstation, if i recall correctly. i even went back and played it again from the start, maximising my research and scrapping, but around the 4th mission (some sort of cyber-invasion not sure though) i simply couldn't beat it.

I'll pimp Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. If you can find it on sale for $10, it might be a good buy. However, it is a much slower-paced RTS that is not about rabid APM button mashing. It has 4x elements with deep and complex strategy that really shines in online multiplayer PvP. However, there isn't too much PvP action except for heavily experienced pros playing 5-on-5, but if you can learn the game and get into it, it's awesome. 5v5's tend to take about 1.5-2 hours to play. (For some reason, most people prefer to play comp stomps.)

Wargame and the World In Conflict Series are great, but as others said, they aren't base building games.

If we're going niche, I have to recommend Cruzader King 2 and Europa Universalis 4. Best strategy games I've ever played.

They're just full of awesome.

I loved C&C Generals/Zero Hour.

Haven't played an RTS since then besides WarGame: Airland Battle that I liked.

Of which I do really like Wargame. It's much slower paced than Generals tho. Kind of like a chess game.

MP is pretty fun.

The Moon Project was always one of my favorites; really old, but fun RTS.

Age of Empires 2 on Steam is great as well; has all the expansions, and you can mod it to death through the workshop.

Anyone know how Wargame Air/Land battle is? Was thinking of picking up the sequel later this year. I like the realism angle, ammo counts for units, fuel considerations etc. There's no "base building" from what I hear though.. disappointing.

It will be dead soon

They are bringing out wargame: red dragon this year, most of the community will likely move onto that. It will be the same way the previous game wargame: european escalation died after airland battle came out

That said airland battle is a sweet game, it genuinely improved on its predecessor without dumbing things down. It added more units, some dedicated servers for 10v10 games (love this feature!!) and a chat room for after game chat/abuse/whatever :awe: Its got its downsides for example the game can be pretty campy in 10v10, long story short the default game mode on release was called destruction, this rewards being a pussy and camping in the trees, they fixed this with a new mode called conquest but it was too late as all the 10v10 regulars were too used to destruction and thats what most people play. So yeah campyness ahoy! You can host your own game up to 4v4 and choose the game mode/map etc.

I wouldn't call the Wargame series a great RTS either, at least for single player, which is mostly what I play these days. Can't comment on the multi.

In the single player, you have to know the map before playing it, if you want to end with some veteran units, and that is the biggest thing I hate about a lot of RTS games. When further missions become harder to beat if you don't own earlier ones (ie know everything about them).

Providence?

The whole 3-part series, of which the game I mentioned above (Moon Project), is $1.39 this week on Steam. Haven't played it? Three games for that, and GOOD RTS games to boot... sold.

Don't know if search will show it from 'Moon Project', search Earth 2150.

I thought C&C Generals had a great mix of RTS features.

I'd be totally happy if they simply updated the game with better graphics.

Got an Android phone?

Check out Clash of Clans. It's HOT right now. And it's free, but if you want to drop a few ($20-50) on IAPs then do it!

Awesome game. :)

I just bought Company of Heroes, Rome Total War and a couple other games (including Alpha Protocol) for 1USD on Humble Bundle... The sale runs out in 2 days...

I'd say it's a fantastic purchase.
