Want to make that USB flash drive bootable?

Hey all!

Well, I came across this the other day and found it immensely useful to make my flash drive bootable.

Worked like a charm and doesn't seem specific for HP drives (mine is a Memorex Thumbdrive)

HP bootable Flash Drive Utility

Hope this isn't a repost or anything...

CalvinHobbes....greatest cartoon ever made! I still remember the last one..where they go sledding off into the great unknown....... 🙂

Anyway, all I did was pop in a Windows 98SE floppy boot disk and told the utility to look there on the A: drive for the system files.

Alternatively, you should be able to make a floppy "system" disk by just inserting a floppy and choosing format with "Make system disk" option checked. Then use that disk as the source for the DOS files....

Hope that helps...

Any idea if there is a way to choose multiple boot options? I've got one that's setup to use a norton ghost utility at work, but it'd be sweet if i could set up a little linux distro or something, as well. I think there are some that are specifically made for flash drives.

I'm not sure.

What I wound up doing is just getting it to boot, then just putting a bunch of directories (e.g. ghost, Util1, Util2, etc..)

You could then write a simple autoexec.bat batch file to execute whichever utility program you want, or just do it from a command prompt....

I guess your mobo also needs to support booting from a USB connected device.

Yep, there is that! As a matter of fact, my Gigabyte 7N400Pro, while stating that it can boot from a USB device, seems to have problems. As a matter of fact, if I have my USB flash drive plugged in during normal bootup, it hangs for quite a while...as soon as I unplug it, the boot process continues.

However, I just got a laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600) and boy, has this baby proved invaluable! (i.e. no floppy module!)
