ive got some 7200 rpm maxtors and one 5400 rpm western digital and there is a definate "whir" from all four of my drives if i could pick up an entirely new setup id go with some quieter "newer" drives.......my newest drive is like 2 years old and is fairly quiet but not silent like my 30gb seagate in my other rig

i know your problem. your cpu fan isn't loud enough =P get a 8000 rpm one, and all your drives will be much much quieter

Yeah I have a WD 80GB SE 7200RPM wit the 8mb cache, and it seems quiet to me. Thanks cerb for telling me about them being 24V. I went back to the ad on newegg and saw that! Why do they sell them there if computers are 12V? I could see people maybe wanting to use them for something else (such as cooling amps in cars, but cars also run off 12V), but I can' think off anything thats 24V...

i know your problem. your cpu fan isn't loud enough =P get a 8000 rpm one, and all your drives will be much much quieter

what is this CPU fan you speak of? im on water 😛

the wd's and maxtors are very loud in comparison to the seagates. you may not notice them at first but they quickly start to whine with time. I modified all my systems with panaflos but my computers actually seemed to get louder. The problem is that the old loud fans dampened that horrible whine the wd's made. Once my fans were quiet my hdds drove me nuts. Anyway, I've replace all drives my in house with barracuda v's. I will never buy another wd as long as some major changes don't happen with their drives.
